Almost 50 years after Stockard Channing swaggered into Rydell High as the sharp-tongued Betty Rizzo in Grease, the actress is living a very different life.

Now 82, the acclaimed star has swapped much of the Hollywood spotlight for a quiet existence in London, where she has happily embraced what she describes as a “reclusive” lifestyle.

“I’m happy being a recluse,” Stockard told The Sunday Times, offering a rare glimpse into the life she has built away from Hollywood.

The actress relocated to London from Maine in 2019, several years after the death of her longtime partner, producer Dan Gillham, in 2014.

His loss, Stockard admitted, affected her more deeply than she initially realised and ultimately became one of the catalysts for starting a new chapter of her life.

“It was more devastating than I realized; it had a lag effect,” she said. “The pattern of my life shifted, so I shifted my life from Maine.”

Stockard now calls London home, having made the move across the Atlantic after spending years living in Maine.

Her decision to leave America wasn’t solely prompted by the loss of her partner. The actress has also said the changing political climate in the US played a part in her decision.

Her move “vaguely coincided with Trump getting elected and the way politics has changed in the US,” she explained.

The subject has particular resonance for Stockard following her acclaimed role as First Lady Dr. Abbey Bartlet in The West Wing, opposite Martin Sheen as President Jed Bartlet.

“People look at The West Wing and go, ‘Wow, wasn’t it great when politicians had an ounce of integrity?'” she said.

Stockard appeared throughout the beloved political drama’s seven-season run, winning an Emmy for her portrayal of Abbey.

Why Stockard Channing never had children

Stockard has also spoken candidly about another aspect of her private life: her decision not to have children.

The actress, who has been married and divorced four times, admitted that motherhood was something she considered, and that she occasionally wonders what her life might look like now had she become a parent.

“Children were thought about and, yeah, I think about them now because it’d be great to have someone taking care of me,” she said.

However, in true Rizzo fashion, Stockard was quick to add a characteristically dry observation: “But hey, children can be just as selfish as everybody else out there.”

Despite choosing a quieter lifestyle, Stockard has never entirely stepped away from acting or the creative world.

Stockard was already in her 30s when she played teenage Pink Lady Rizzo in Grease, the 1978 movie that would make her recognizable to generations of fans.

Starring alongside John Travolta‘s Danny Zuko and the late Olivia Newton-John’s Sandy Olsson, Stockard’s tough-talking Rizzo became one of the movie’s most memorable characters.

But Grease was only one chapter in an extraordinary career spanning film, television and theatre.

Stockard went on to appear in movies including The First Wives Club and Practical Magic, while her television career included memorable roles in The Good Wife and The West Wing.

She also earned an Academy Award nomination for her performance in the 1993 film Six Degrees of Separation, having previously won a Tony Award for playing the same character on Broadway.

The actress has continued to challenge herself well into her 80s and has even moved behind the scenes, making her directorial debut with a production of Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape at the Edinburgh Festival.

Stockard is also returning to one of her most beloved movie roles, reprising her part as Aunt Frances Owens in Practical Magic 2.

She first played the eccentric aunt in the 1998 cult classic alongside Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, who are also returning for the sequel.

The original movie has developed an enduring following in the decades since its release, meaning Stockard will be introduced to yet another generation of viewers.
