Jason Momoa is releasing one of his most personal projects yet. The proudly Hawaiian actor stars in “Chief of War,” a nine-episode series that explores the story of a warrior trying to unify the islands in the late 17th century, before Western colonization. It marks the first time Momoa has co-created a TV series. It also marks another instance where he gets to sit in the director’s seat.

Apple+ has shared the series’ official poster

Based on true events, the series was created by Momoa and Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett, with both sharing their Hawaiian ancestry, per a statement from Apple TV+. The two have worked together previously, with Sibbett being one of the writers of “Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom,” which starred Momoa as the titular superhero.

The series stars Momoa as Ka‘iana, the warrior with hopes of uniting the islands. He’s joined by a cast of mostly Polynesian actors, including Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, and more.

The first trailer shows Ka’iana preparing for the invasion of the West, showcasing many of Momoa’s stunts and action sequences, including some stunning shots of the gorgeous islands boasting greenery, the ocean, and more natural sights.

What is Jason Momoa doing next?

“Chief of War” marks Momoa’s second collaboration with Apple TV+. He previously starred in “See,” a dystopian sci-fi series set in the future, when humans have lost their eyesight. The series ran for three seasons.
