US Vice President JD Vance is sharing his thoughts on what he thinks is one of the great creative works of our time. In a new video, Vance discusses “Emily in Paris” and calls it a “masterwork of American television.”

Created by Darren Star (“Sex and the City,” “Beverly Hills 90201”) and starring Lily Collins, the series follows Emily Cooper, an American and aspiring marketing executive who moves to Paris for work. In the clip, Vance excitedly lays out the premise of the series.

“‘Emily in Paris’ is about this sort of bubbly girl who goes to Paris and has a cool job and has great experiences and drinks fine wine, and does all things you would do in Paris,” he said. “But what it actually is, it is a massive cultural criticism of millennial decision-making.”

Vance can’t help but imbue “Emily in Paris” with his politics. “She goes to Paris, and it’s obvious to everybody watching the show that she should end up with the French chef. She should marry this guy. They should start a family. Whether in Paris or America, they should build a life together. That’s what they should be doing.”

Of course, as these series tend to go, the romance is not as simple. “What both of them do is they make a series of absurd, sometimes hilarious, sometimes not particularly believable, mistakes where she ends up with a bunch of random people or focus on her job,” he said. “The fact that they keep on making atrocious decisions is kind of like the best bit of cultural commentary, I would say cultural criticism of my generation, the millennials,” Vance concluded.

“It is, at the risk of overstating it, the Shakespeare of our time.”

Who would have thought “Emily in Paris” could spark such a passionate response from one of the leading figures in our political sphere?

‘Emily in Paris’ and its hold on world politics

Incredibly, this isn’t the first time that “Emily in Paris” has been a source of fixation for political leaders. In 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron and the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, exchanged some words after the series took an Italian detour.

“We will fight hard. And we will ask them to remain in Paris!” said Macron to Variety at the time.

Gualtieri shared his thoughts on Twitter. “Take it easy, Emmanuel Macron. Emily in Rome is perfect,” he wrote.
