Justin Bieber and Usher, once inseparable collaborators, reportedly had a “heated exchange” at Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s star-studded Oscars after-party at the Chateau Marmont in L.A. on Sunday, March 15.
Sources say Usher approached Bieber with “energy and anger,” and the encounter allegedly escalated into what some described as a fistfight. Authorities were not involved, and the exact reason for the altercation remains unclear, as reported by TMZ.
The party itself was nothing short of a Hollywood spectacle. Attendees reportedly included Hailey Bieber, Michael B. Jordan, Ryan Coogler, Teyana Taylor, Timothée Chalamet, Jacob Elordi, Emma Stone, Emma Watson, Kylie Jenner, Kendall Jenner, Kris Jenner, Megan Fox, Sofía Vergara, Vin Diesel, Jon Batiste, Jack O’Connell, Chloë Bailey, Vanessa and Natalia Bryant, as well as Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, among others.
Despite the recent tension, Bieber remains focused on his upcoming Coachella performance. The singer encouraged fans to follow him on Twitch for behind-the-scenes access, saying, “This is our space for the next few months, so excited. I’m gonna be putting on a hell of a show for you guys at Coachella. I can’t wait. So getting ready, getting the gang together, get inspired.”
A friendship built on mentorship:
Usher played a pivotal role in Bieber’s early career. Scooter Braun discovered Bieber on YouTube in 2007 and brought him to Atlanta to meet Usher, who ultimately won a “bidding war” against Justin Timberlake to sign the teen under his RBMG label.
Usher guided Bieber’s first steps in the industry, collaborating on hits like “Somebody to Love” and presenting him at major events including the 2011 Grammys. At the time, Usher described himself as a “brother and protector.”
Over the years, the relationship evolved from mentor-protégé to a more “man-to-man” dynamic. He even attended Justin and Hailey’s wedding in 2019.
Signs of a fractured relationship:
Tensions began surfacing publicly in 2024 when Usher invited Bieber to appear in his Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show. Bieber declined, reportedly wanting to go a different direction at that point. However, Usher later revealed there was no bad blood between them.
By January 2025, Bieber had stopped following Usher on Instagram, along with other key figures from his early career, including Scooter Braun, a move that alarmed fans and hinted at deeper personal changes.
Experts suggest that Bieber, now a father, is reevaluating who in his inner circle truly has his best interests at heart, opting for privacy and autonomy over old industry ties.
Recent reports indicate that the March 15 altercation may be the latest chapter in this evolving dynamic. Some sources claim Bieber is actively trying to “freeze out” figures linked to his early rise in music. Others point to external pressures.
For now, both artists remain focused on their respective careers, with Bieber preparing to headline Coachella and Usher continuing his ongoing music and mentorship endeavors.
