Two months after Katy Perry made her romance with Justin Trudeau Instagram official, the former prime minister’s eldest son is offering his own review. And it is glowing.
“She’s cool, she’s nice,” 18-year-old Xavier Trudeau said in a recent social media video, weighing in publicly on his dad’s relationship for the first time. “We talked for hours, talking about my music. She gave me advice and next steps for me and stuff.”
For a teenager building a career in R&B under the moniker Xav, those conversations clearly meant something. Xavier has long described music as more than a hobby. “I always loved music, whether it’s creating it, listening to it,” he explained on The Brandon Gonez Show podcast in May. “I always had a passion for it.”
That passion started early. During Justin’s marriage to Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, the couple enrolled their eldest in music lessons ranging from drums to guitar and piano. Eventually, Xavier began producing beats on his phone and recording over them. Over time, that experimentation evolved into polished R&B tracks.
“They’ve been supported since the start,” he said of his parents. “Every single time I come back from the studio, I’d have something to show then and we sit at dinner and just listen to it like, ‘Oh, I like this. I don’t like that.’”
“They love it,” he continued. “They’re happy for me. They’re happy I’m choosing my own path in life.” Music, in many ways, appears to be a bridge between Xavier and his father’s new partner.
In a Feb. 21 Instagram video with G Hobs, and in a TikTok filmed with creator Guy Hobeika, Xavier detailed spending extended time with Perry discussing his sound and future as an artist.
His comments suggest not only approval but a sense of mentorship. Perry, a global pop star behind hits like “California Gurls” and “Dark Horse,” has decades of industry experience. For a young musician navigating his first steps, that kind of access is rare.
The relationship between Justin and Perry first sparked headlines in July 2025, when the two were seen together in Montreal. Days later, the former prime minister was spotted in the crowd at one of her shows, enthusiastically dancing along. In October, they made a high profile appearance at Crazy Horse Paris while celebrating Perry’s 41st birthday, further fueling speculation.
At the time, neither addressed the rumors. Justin, who separated from Sophie in 2023 after 18 years of marriage, remained publicly silent. Perry also kept quiet until December 2025, when she confirmed the relationship on Instagram, effectively hard launching their romance.
Since then, the couple has appeared at major international events, including the World Economic Forum in Davos, signaling that their relationship extends well beyond casual dates.
For Sophie, the transition has unfolded under intense public scrutiny. Speaking on the Arlene Is Alone podcast, she reflected candidly on navigating life after divorce and her ex husband’s new high profile romance.
“We’re human beings and stuff affects us. Normal. How you react to stuff is your decision. So I choose to try to listen to the music instead of the noise,” Sophie said. “I’m very aware that a lot of public stuff out there can be triggers. Right, we’re humans. What I do with it is my decision. The woman I want to become through this is my decision.”
She also emphasized the importance of unity when it comes to their three children, including Ella Grace, 17, and Hadrien, 11. “We have separate lives, but we have one family life,” she said. “You need a common, conscious decision that our family is our greatest creation and we’re going to feed it together, no matter if we’re on different life paths.”
Meanwhile, Perry has been navigating her own new chapter. The singer shares 4 year old daughter Daisy Dove Bloom with actor Orlando Bloom. Though the two ended their engagement, Bloom has spoken warmly about their co parenting dynamic.
“I’m so grateful,” he shared on Today in September. “We’ve got a beautiful daughter. When you leave everything on the field like I did in this movie, I feel grateful for all of it.” “We’re gonna be great,” he concluded. “It’s nothing but love.”
