Donald Trump’s eldest granddaughter, Kai Trump, sparked debate on Sunday when she shared a video to YouTube that followed her foray into the luxury grocery store Erewhon, which has been known for years as the most expensive grocery store in the US.
The chain, which was founded in Boston in 1966 and now boasts 11 locations across Los Angeles, focuses on selling organic, vegan and locally-sourced food, and has often been criticized for its incredibly high price points.
The 18-year-old took her Secret Service agents, as well as her cameraman, along for the ride as she explored an Erewhon store in Los Angeles and taste-tested several items, including a sushi platter and the famous Erewhon smoothie.
“If you guys don’t know Erewhon, Erewhon is the most expensive grocery store pretty much out there,” she began in her video, which was originally titled “I Tried the World’s Most Expensive Grocery Store”.
“So we’re going to get my favorite stuff, even supplements, whatever it may be and then go home and try it out.” As Kai walked along the aisles and saw the prices, she shared her surprise with her audience.
“I’m gonna need to file for bankruptcy…everything’s super expensive.” She went on to buy supplements, a water bottle shaker, sushi, a jar of dates and several snacks, before exclaiming that she was “trying to stay calm” after learning the branded sweatshirt cost $165.
At the checkout, the athlete’s single bag of groceries racked up a total cost of $233. She then returned to her hotel room to try out some of the snacks she had purchased, including the sushi platter. “I love sushi. That is the worst tuna I’ve ever tasted in my entire life,” Kai said as she spat out the food. “It was fishy and, like, hard. I’m gonna throw up.”

Kai also tried some rice balls and vegan buffalo cauliflower, as well as the short ribs. “It’s good,” she said. “Is this worth $37? No. I could probably make this all at home for…under $10.”
The brunette’s video instantly sparked debate in the comment section, with many YouTube users calling her “tone deaf” and “out of touch” for spending over $200 on a bag of groceries while millions of Americans are struggling to put food on the table and pay their bills.
“Thanks for showing us the grocery store none of us will ever shop at,” said one commenter, while another wrote: “Most Americans can barely afford regular groceries.”
Kai has been active on YouTube for years and frequently posts videos providing a snapshot into her life. She boasts 2.7 million followers on Instagram, 3.7 million on TikTok and 1.45 million subscribers on YouTube.
When she is not filming, Kai is an avid golfer and is set to attend the University of Miami in September 2026, after committing to play on the Hurricanes golf team. She is the eldest daughter of Donald Trump Jr. and his ex-wife, Vanessa Trump, who is currently dating golfing legend, Tiger Woods.
