Karen Hauer has revealed she has quit Strictly Come Dancing after 14 years of working on the BBC dance show. The professional dancer appeared visibly emotional as she shocked fans with her update on Saturday morning, telling them in an Instagram video: “Hey, everyone. I’ve got something to tell you. It’s a tough one, but here we go.”
Karen, 43, continued: “After 14 years on Strictly Come Dancing, I’ve decided this is the right time for me to close this chapter and take on new projects in other areas that I’m passionate about.
“Strictly completely changed my life, not only as a performer and a teacher, but as a human being. I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many incredible people and brilliant celebrity partners who have become close friends and people I admire so much.
“None of this would have been possible without the amazing fans. You’ve been there since day one, when I just moved to the UK and had no idea what I was getting myself into. I’m so grateful you watched me grow over the years and witnessed all of my different hairstyles.”
Karen went on to thank the people behind the popular BBC One production, as well as her fellow dancers, saying: “I’m gonna miss everyone who makes the show possible. From hair, makeup, wardrobe, the crew behind the cameras, lighting, production and staging, the runner, Steve Arch and the band, the singers and the producers and welfare team who take such good care of us.
“It’s an incredible machine powered by brilliant people. To my fellow professional dancers who I adore, I will always be cheering you on. You truly are the best in the business.”
Celebrity reaction
Fans and friends, including fellow celebrities, were quick to react to Karen’s post. BBC presenter Zoe Ball, who fronted Strictly‘s spin-off show It Takes Two for ten years, replied: “You’re one awesome woman Karen. So many incredible memories of your dances with brilliant partners Dave M, Jeremy V, Charles V and Harry and more. All your pro dances wow. Exciting adventures ahead. Love you Hotlips Hauer.”
Sam Quek, who competed in the 2024 series, wrote, “Going to be so missed. On to the next chapter. Big love,” while Angela Scanlon and Josh Widdicombe, who was partnered with Karen in the Christmas 2024 special, left love heart emojis on her post.
Judges Shirley Ballas and Motsi Mabuse also commented on Karen’s exit. Shirley replied with a string of heart emojis, while Motsi posted: “Love you dear all the best.” Pro dancer Johannes Radebe also wrote: “There’s no one like you K. We love you mamasita!”
Strictly 2026 line-up
Karen’s announcement comes just weeks after it was reported the BBC had axed five of its professional dancers ahead of the upcoming 2026 series this autumn.
The Sun reported that Nadiya Bychkova, 36, Gorka Marquez, 35, Luba Mushtuk, 36, and Michelle Tsiakkas, 30, had all been dropped, as well as Karen.
At the time, the BBC told HELLO!: “Plans for Strictly Come Dancing 2026 will be confirmed in due course.”
The pro dancer shake-up comes after Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman announced last year that they would not be returning as co-hosts.
