The Prince and Princess of Wales have broken their social media silence with a personal message after a major triumph at the Winter Olympics. The royal couple showed their public support for Team GB after the exciting news that the men’s curling team have qualified for the gold medal match.
After a nail-biting semi-final match against Switzerland, Bruce Mouat, Grant Hardie, Hammy McMillan Jr and Bobby Lammie of Team GB came out on top with an 8-5 win at Milano Cortina. The curling team will now have a chance to top the podium as they take on Canada for the gold prize on Saturday. Ahead of the highly-anticipated final showdown, William and Kate wished the team all the best.
“Best of luck in the final Bruce, Grant, Hammy and Bobby! We will be cheering you on,” the royals commented under a post from the official Team GB Instagram account. The Prince and Princess of Wales signed off their message personally with their first name initials ‘W & C’ for William and Catherine respectively.
William and Kate’s public social media message comes a day after Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on Thursday morning on suspicion of misconduct in public office. William’s father, King Charles III, addressed the news in a statement, sharing his “deepest concern”.
William and Kate’s curling connection
Ahead of the Winter Olympics, the Prince and Princess of Wales met up with members of Team GB’s men’s and women’s curling teams. The royals were shown around Scotland’s National Curling Academy in Stirling two weeks ahead of the Olympic Games kick off. During their visit, they took to the ice alongside Scottish curler Jen Dodds and her mixed-doubles partner, Bruce Mouat, who has just qualified for the men’s final.
Jen and Bruce spoke exclusively to HELLO! about their day with the royals. “I was starstruck, to be honest,” Bruce, 31, told us. “They walked into the ice rink just like two normal people would.”
He continued: “It was so cool, having the Prince and Princess shaking hands with us, chatting and wishing us good luck. I thought it was really special that they came along and I was honoured to have the opportunity to teach them how to curl.”
Jed added: “You could tell they were a wee bit nervous. Obviously, it’s not normal to slide about on the ice, but for a first attempt, they both did very well. I was impressed by both of them.”
Other sport ties
William and Kate are both patrons for another popular sport. Kate has been the official Royal Patron of the Rugby Football Union and the Rugby Football League since 2022. Meanwhile, William has been the Royal Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union since 2016.
Ahead of the England vs Wales Six Nations match earlier this month, the royal couple shared a joint message sending good luck to both teams: “Wishing the best of luck to England and Wales Rugby as they go head to head at Twickenham today in the Men’s Six Nations Championship.
The statement, which was shared to their joint Instagram handle, continued: “As patrons of both unions respectively…May the best team win [trophy emoji]. W&C.”
England ended the match victorious, winning 48–7 against Wales.
