The Prince and Princess of Wales will use very strict protocol to protect the future partners of their children, a royal expert has revealed.
William and Kate, both 44, are keen to ensure that the future love interests of their children are protected from press intrusions and are expected to replicate the same privacy agreements that protected their own romance as it blossomed during their time at St Andrews University.
According to the former broadcaster and royal author, Simon Vigar, the Waleses have already put considerable thought into their potential romances of Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight.
Speaking to GB News, Simon shared how William and Kate will manage the public introduction of their children’s future spouses.
William’s agreement
William and Kate reaped the benefits of ‘the Gentleman’s Agreement’, which meant the press agreed to leave the Prince in peace during his studies.
The couple themselves had enjoyed a total media blackout during the early days of their courtship, allowing them to get to know each other privately while continuing to focus on their university studies.
They will likely employ a similar procedure for their offspring. The expert said the early censorship of their relationship “was great” for the royal couple, adding that “the British media should get some credit” for upholding it.
The couple, who have now been together a quarter of a century, first met at St Andrews University in 2001. They were friends at first, but their relationship soon evolved romantically, and they became boyfriend and girlfriend around a year later. The young couple enjoyed around two years of private courtship before being outed publicly.
© Getty ImagesThe only time the agreement was ever broken was in 2001 when a film crew from Ardent Productions, a TV company owned by William’s uncle, Prince Edward, appeared on campus at the Scottish college. They were immediately ordered off after being caught attempting to film the Prince.
The breach took place just two days into William’s first term and was not received well. The company was forced to issue an apology, and fortunately it remained the only occasion in which the agreement was breached.

The royal children
William and Kate will likely seek a “similar deal” when their own children are in university, Simon said.He added that “what can be printed” about when their children start dating will see change. “It’ll definitely develop.”

Speaking on the Apple TV documentary, The Reluctant Traveler, William issued several hints that indicated he would seek greater protections for his children as they progress into adulthood. He said: “Change is on the agenda.”
