The Princess of Wales broke tradition by forgoing her usual post for Mother’s Day on Sunday – but did share an important message that went unnoticed by most.
In previous years, Kate, 44, has unveiled sweet family photos of life at home with Prince William and their children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven. But in 2025, she bucked tradition by sharing an edited clip celebrating the power of Mother Nature instead and, this year, appeared to go without a post entirely.
However, the Princess did share a Mothering Sunday message to social media via her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, which aims to highlight the importance of the early years of childhood.
It read: “Today we celebrate every mother, carer and caregiver whose steady love gives children the foundations to thrive. Here’s to all who nurture and guide with the quiet acts that shape the next generation. Happy Mother’s Day.”
The message was shared on the Foundation’s Instagram page, @earlychildhood, accompanied by a poignant video celebrating the power of a mother’s love, ending with a “Happy Mother’s Day” message.
The photoshop mishap
The major change to the traditional Mother’s Day format comes two years after the Princess’s family portrait in 2024 was found to be digitally altered.
Following widespread speculation over inconsistencies in the image, Kate took the rare step of issuing a personal apology, acknowledging that she had edited the photo herself.
“Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing,” she said. “I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C.”
At the time, the Princess was recovering at home from abdominal surgery, and her cancer diagnosis had not yet been made public.
Now, the mother-of-three seems to be taking a different approach to Mother’s Day, perhaps to prevent another overreaction from the media. The 2024 picture sparked a frenzy of online conspiracy theories.
“It was a really ludicrous, over exaggerated response to something, particularly in an industry where doctored photos of celebrities are routine,” royal author and expert Robert Hardman told HELLO! previously.
Prince William’s tribute to Diana
Though Kate did not share her traditional picture, royal fans were left delighted by a Mother’s Day message from Prince William instead.
The Prince of Wales issued a heartfelt message in memory of his late mother, Princess Diana. Diana, who passed away in 1997, would have turned 65 on 1 July.
Taking to Instagram on 15 March, Prince William shared a photo showing Princess Diana with her two-year-old son in a field of flowers, taken at Highgrove in 1984.
The prince penned: “Remembering my mother, today and every day. Thinking of all those who are remembering someone they love today. Happy Mother’s Day. W.”
