The Princess of Wales has revealed she’s cut back on alcohol since her cancer diagnosis.
During a visit to Fabal Beerhall on the Bermondsey Beer Mile in east London on Thursday, Kate, 44, declined to try beer and cider, telling owner Hannah Rhodes: “Since my diagnosis I haven’t had much alcohol.” Opting for a soft drink instead, she added: “It’s something I have to be a lot more conscious of now.”
However, her husband Prince William sipped on the beverages at the tasting, saying he is a “cider man”. Kate herself tried her hand at brewing at the Southwark Brewing Company, climbing up a ladder to stir the hops in and also took part in a pint-pulling competition.
Kate is in remission after being diagnosed with cancer in 2024, with William later calling it the “hardest year” of his life. King Charles was also diagnosed with cancer that year and continues to undergo treatment.
Hannah Rhodes later told press: “She (Kate) said something along the lines of since my diagnosis it has been best to avoid alcohol.”
A royal tipple
Previously, both Kate and William have been said to enjoy their wine. They were pictured sipping on glasses of red during their 2016 tour of Canada. The couple also served a sparkling wine, Chapel Down’s Brut Rose, at their wedding in 2011.
The Princess has pulled pints on several engagements and tasted Guinness during a visit to Belfast in 2019. She even sipped on a spicy margarita during the 2023 Houghton Hall music festival in Norfolk.
William is known to prefer beer and cider, joining ex-England player Frank Lampard for a pint in Battersea to watch the Euros in 2020. Last year, he joined Aston Villa fans for a pub trip to Wetherspoons.
The late Queen Elizabeth II was known to enjoy a gin and Dubonnet, while Queen Camilla is fond of red wine.
A day out in London
William and Kate took part in three engagements on Thursday, visiting Borough Market, the Bermondsey Beer Mile and the RNLI lifeboat station in Westminster.

The Princess showed off her barista skills by making a cappuccino for her husband – but the brew was turned away for not being decaf.
Later, they travelled by boat to the RNLI lifeboat station, which is the busiest in the UK. The couple was seen laughing with one another as they went for a spin on a lifeboat – clearly not deterred by the speed.
