It was a night of throwbacks at Windsor Castle. As evening fell this past Wednesday night at the castle, the British royal family hosted a state banquet in honor of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu. Kate Middleton turned heads in a green gown and the historic Lover’s Knot tiara. However, she wasn’t the only one making headlines with her choice of clothing. Princess Anne once again showed just why her style is timeless, opting to rewear pieces she first wore over half a century ago.
The coat she first wore in 1969
For the grand evening, Princess Anne, sister of King Charles III, for whom she serves as Gold Stick-in-Waiting, also known as the person entrusted with the monarch’s security, wore the Meander tiara, one of her favorite pieces. The stunning jewelry item was given to her by her mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who had received it from her own mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg.
It was the perfect piece to complement her City of London choker. Despite how majestic her jewels were, the items were ultimately overshadowed by her coat. White, with cutout detailing on the sleeves enhanced with crystals, the piece once again cemented Princess Anne as the royal family’s most timeless and sustainable dresser. Anne first wore this coat in 1969, 57 years ago.
This is a piece she loves. She previously wore it to the premiere of “Run Wild, Run Free,” a British drama starring Mark Lester, John Mills, Gordon Jackson, and Angela Douglas. For the Windsor Castle state dinner, she updated the look by swapping the collar for a simpler design.
In doing so, she shows that with a simple tweak, new life can be breathed into a vintage wardrobe piece.

Another outfit that was hotly debated was Kate Middleton’s, who opted for a striking green gown by Andrew GN that she paired with the beloved Lover’s Knot tiara.
The jewelry item has a long royal history, created in 1913 by Gerrard, the Crown’s first official jeweler. The item was first commissioned by Queen Mary and was worn by Queen Elizabeth II on numerous occasions, and Princess Diana of Wales. Kate first wore it in 2015, at a diplomatic reception.
