The Princess of Wales was busy being sociable during her family outing to the Commonwealth Games on Saturday with her husband and their three children. After a busy day of spectating and meeting athletes and their families, the Waleses left the sporting event together in a car outside the velodrome.

While Prince William ushered his kids all into the vehicle before walking around to the other side of the car, the Princess of Wales was in no hurry to head off just yet. The royal got caught up in her conversation with former Olympic cyclist Sir Christ Hoy, animatedly chatting to the athlete on the pavement while her family waited in the car.

The Princess eventually waved goodbye and got in the backseat alongside her children. Earlier in the day, the Prince and Princess of Wales watched the track cycling in the velodrome alongside English former professional track and road cyclist, Dame Laura Kenny, and Sir Chris Hoy, who sat in front of the royals and next to Duchess Sophie.

The Waleses’ family day out

William and Kate briefly resurfaced from their annual summer holiday break to attend the penultimate day of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on 1 August with their sons, Prince George, 13, and Prince Louis, eight, and their daughter, Princess Charlotte, 11.

The family of five arrived at The Hydro, where they spoke with English powerlifter Mark Swan and Scottish gymnast Reuben Ward. They then enjoyed watching the cycling, judo and netball semi-final match between Australia and Jamaica, which ended in a victory for Jamaica by a single point.

Prince Louis was up to his playful antics, providing endless entertainment with his animated reactions. While his two siblings have joined their parents at sport outings like Wimbledon, the Commonwealth Games marked Louis’ first time attending a major sporting event. The eight-year-old was pictured grinning while wearing a bright red bucket hat at one point in the crowd, much to the amusement of those around him.

The Waleses later met with Welsh athletes and their families at Wales House in the centre of Glasgow. During a conversation with twin gymnasts Abigail and Emily Roper, who both won bronze medals, it was revealed Louis has taken up a surprising hobby: practicing handstands.

Speaking of how the athletes prepared for the Games, Kate asked: “And what are you doing? As Charlotte was asking, are you doing a lot of stretching and conditioning?”

She then turned to her youngest son and said: “Louis, you’re perfecting your handstand at the moment.”

“A bit,” he said, with his arms crossed, “But Charlotte says I’m not very good.” When the gymnasts asked Charlotte if she could do a handstand, the young Princess replied: “Yeah.”
