Katherine Heigl hit back at social media criticism following her appearance at the Wine, Women & Shoes Benefit at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate on Sunday, where attendees helped to raise money for the Big Dog Ranch Rescue.
The Grey’s Anatomy star is a passionate animal advocate and runs her own charity, Heidi’s Hounds of Hope, which is part of the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, named for her late brother. After news spread that Katherine had attended the event co-chaired by Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, the actress received a wave of backlash online, accusing her of aligning with the Trump family.
“Animals don’t vote,” she shared in a statement following her appearance. “The only room they don’t like is the euthanasia room at a shelter. They are completely at the mercy of us, and they have no voice of their own.”
“This event was about animal advocacy – something that has always been deeply personal to me,” she continued.
“Anyone who knows me knows that protecting animals is one of my greatest passions. My mother, Nancy, and I have spent years advocating for animals through the Jason Heigl Foundation. As a society, we should all come together to protect the voiceless and the innocent. This should not be a polarizing issue.”
Critics were dissatisfied with her statement and took to Instagram to share their thoughts, which Katherine responded to. Following her declaration that “animals don’t vote”, one user rebutted: “No, but if they did, they would have better judgment than you!”
Katherine responded: “Just curious…what do you do that really matters…do you think comments on an Instagram post matter to animals who have had humans pour gasoline on them and set them on fire? Who have had humans vote conservative or liberal but have been left to starve and suffer? Seriously…I’m very curious what you truly think matters to the voiceless and innocent…actions or just Instagram posturing?”

Another critic wrote that there are “so many ways to get involved that aren’t putting on a dress and drinking cocktails masquerading as helping,” which appeared to anger the 47-year-old.
“How are you so sure about that…have you been to any? Have you donated a significant part of your income to anything? Anything you claim to care so much about?” she wrote. “Have you done anything more than comment on what someone else is doing or not doing to your standard? Just curious…”
Katherine previously opened up to the Palm Beach Post about her animal welfare foundation, sharing: “Our biggest goal right now really is to diminish the number of unwanted litters coming into this country, which is what is overcrowding our shelters.”
“We hear the word ‘shelter,’ and we think these animals are safe there, and they are not. It’s not the shelter’s fault, and it’s not the fault of the shelter’s workers. It’s that our country is overrun with puppy-mill breeders.”
The event marked Katherine’s first public appearance in more than two years, following her unexpected cameo at the 2024 Emmy Awards alongside her Grey’s Anatomy castmates.
