Kelly Ripa has revealed the hilariously Kelly Ripa way she managed to hurt her back. It wasn’t deadlifting or an extreme sport; it was reaching for toilet paper.
The Live with Kelly and Mark host, 55, opened up about the bizarre injury in a behind-the-scenes clip shared by the show’s Instagram account.
“It’s really embarrassing,” Ripa told audience members before explaining how it happened. “Guess how I hurt my back? Sitting on a toilet,” she said.
It all came down to the toilet paper
Ripa explained that she, her husband, and co-host Mark Consuelos were staying at a hotel when she went to the bathroom. But the toilet paper wasn’t where she expected it to be.
“Typically the toilet tissue is on this side, like a normal person,” she said, gesturing to one side. But at the hotel, it was positioned on the other side.
So Ripa reached across with her right arm. “And I went like that and hurt my back,” she explained.

© GettyThe back injury isn’t the only thing Ripa has been recovering from lately. In July, she underwent gum graft surgery, a procedure she previously explained was necessary because of gum recession.
On her Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, Ripa said she is an “over-brusher” and admitted that her habit of brushing her teeth too much had contributed to the problem. “I brush my teeth too much. It’s a good-bad habit,” she said.
She also joked about how difficult it was to follow her dentist’s instructions after the procedure.
During a recent episode of Live, Consuelos explained that Ripa’s dentist had recommended the surgery years ago and that the recovery was particularly painful. “She famously doesn’t feel pain,” he said. “When she goes to the dentist, she doesn’t use the Novocaine. But this one hurts, so I know it’s bad.”
When Consuelos was hosting the show alone, he was letting fans know the chaos that was happening at home. Like Ripa’s insistence on seeing what was going on inside her mouth, despite doctors’ orders.
“I’m trying to keep her to follow the rules, follow the directions,” he said. Along with not talking, she has to eat soft food, can’t suck out of a straw, and she can’t examine the surgery site. “Which means pulling down the lip,” Mark explained.
© GettyOne night Ripa asked if Consuelos could look at it. “I’m like, ‘ I’m not pulling your lip down,” he said. So Ripa bent down and got in a position where he didn’t have to pull her lip, but he could still see. “So I’m down, I’m like, ‘it looks great,” he said, laughing
Rip was also instructed not to talk, which she admitted herself was impossible to do. “Oh, I was talking the whole time,” she told PEOPLE. “I was talking like crazy. He was like, ‘You’re not supposed to be talking.’ I’m like, ‘I’m fine!’”
