Khloé Kardashian’s healing process after her dad’s death

When “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” first crashed into our lives in 2007, it felt like pure chaos wrapped in designer labels. But behind the reality TV glitz, for Khloé Kardashian, the show quietly played a much deeper role.

Four years earlier, Khloé lost her dad, Robert Kardashian Sr., to esophageal cancer. She was just 19, still basically a teenager trying to figure out life, and then it slammed to a stop.

On her “Khloé in Wonder Land” podcast, Khloé opened up about just how heavy that loss hit her. “I was incredibly angry,” she admitted about her father’s death. “Like, for about three years.” If you’re counting, that’s roughly 1,095 days of hot grief simmering under the surface.

But here’s where things took a surprising turn: filming season 1 of “KUWTK.” One day, a producer pulled her aside and asked her to sit for an interview and talk about her dad. “I was so annoyed at this producer,” she said. “I was like, ‘Why are they making me sit in this dark room and talk about something I don’t wanna talk about?'”

But that uncomfortable, forced conversation ended up being a massive emotional breakthrough. “It was as if a house got lifted off of me after that conversation,” Khloé shared. She described how she fought the whole process, but something inside her shifted permanently once it was over. “That was the last time that I cried when talking about my dad in a bad way.”

Robert was born on February 22nd, 1944 and he married Kris Jenner (who was Kris Houghton at the time) in 1978, and they had four children, Kim, Kourtney, Khloe, and Robert Kardashian Jr. The couple split in 1991, and he went on to marry two more times before his death in 2003.

From that day forward, Khloé Kardashian said she could finally release the guilt and anger she had been carrying around like a 100-pound emotional handbag. Now, when she talks about her dad, it’s with “smiles and happiness and admiration and understanding.”

More than two decades later, Khloé says she’s truly “at peace” with Robert’s passing, and she even feels his presence in her life today. It’s the quiet, lasting comfort no Instagram filter can ever capture.

Of course, Khloé isn’t one to gatekeep her grief journey. In February 2024, she shared a touching video on Instagram featuring a montage of throwback photos with her dad, paired with a gentle audio clip about “holding space” for someone you love.

Her caption was pure Khloé. “This audio can be viewed as sad or beautiful,” she wrote. “I choose beauty. I am not sad anymore. Of course, I miss him every single day and wish he were here to meet our babies but I’m not sad. In fact, I feel blessed that I was chosen to have 19 years with the most incredible Man I have ever known. Some people never get that. We did!”

Khloé’s story reminds us that healing isn’t always polished or Instagram-ready. Sometimes it’s messy. Sometimes it’s annoying. Sometimes, it happens when you’re literally being forced to relive your worst memories on camera. (Shoutout to that producer, whoever you are.)
