Shirley MacLaine keeps a relatively low profile nowadays, so fans were stunned when she shared a rare public message on social media on Tuesday.

The 92-year-old is an iconic actress and will always be known for her role in the 1969 film adaptation of Sweet Charity, so it’s fitting that her brief appearance was in honor of Bob Fosse‘s directorial debut.

Shirley appeared only too happy to promote the film screening at Southampton Playhouse on August 25, appearing in a video, which you can watch below, on the cinema’s official Instagram.

“Hi Southampton Playhouse, wish I could be with you,” she began. “I would like to see Sweet Charity again.

“Now, while you’re watching it, remember how hard we worked,” she continued, before quipping: “And between you and me, it didn’t do very well.

“So I hope you guys like it. Much love,” she concluded, blowing a kiss to the camera.

Fans were delighted to see Shirley on-screen again, with many dubbing her an “icon” in the comment section and praising her brief message.

A third added: “OMG! Absolute ICON – true Hollywood greatness. What an actor.” A fourth said: “One of the last living old Hollywood legends.”

Shirley was nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical at the 1970 Golden Globe Awards for her role as Charity Hope Valentine.

The synopsis reads: “Charity Hope Valentine (Shirley MacLaine) always tries to look on the bright side of life, despite working in a rundown dance hall and contending with a seemingly endless run of bad dates.

“Determined to find love, Charity falls for suave actor Vittorio Vidal (Ricardo Montalban), but their romance is all too brief. However, when Charity finds herself stuck in an elevator with the reserved Oscar Lindquist (John McMartin), it turns out that she may have finally met her match.”

Shirley’s 70-year career saw her find astronomical fame in the world of acting, dancing and writing, making her the ultimate triple threat of her generation, but she is not the only member of her family to experience public success.

In September 1954, the star married her late husband, businessman and producer Steve Parker, in New York, and enjoyed a 28-year open marriage with him before he died in 2001.

During their relationship, they welcomed one child together, a daughter named Stephanie Sachiko Parker, who was born in 1956. She is often referred to as Sachi Parker.

Sachi first joined the entertainment industry in the 1980s and drew on her mom’s famous connections to score her debut role, appearing as Dorothy Jenks in the television series Hotel.

She got her big break in 1985, when she starred as Bobbi in the crime drama Stick, directed by Burt Reynolds.

The budding star was also cast in Back to the Future, About Last Night with Rob Lowe and Demi Moore, and in Peggy Sue Got Married, featuring Kathleen Turner.

She steadily built up her acting credits to include more prominent roles in Hollywood films, including Belle, opposite Bill Murray’s character, in 1988’s Scrooged and as Libby Ohiemacher in the drama Welcome Home.
