Martin Short and Meryl Streep fuelled dating rumours for well over a year after they co-starred in the hit Hulu and Disney+ comedy series, Only Murders in the Building, and fans immediately fell in love with their chemistry.

Martin Short and Meryl Streep first appeared together in 2015
Though it is believed that they knew each other beforehand, having been in the same industry for decades, they first appeared publicly together in 2015, posing backstage at the Jacobs Theater for It’s Only a Play, which Martin had joined the month before.
More than two years later, the pair sat next to each other during the AFI’s 45th Lifetime Achievement Award Gala tribute held for Diane Keaton on 17 June 2017.
Martin and Meryl were seen together more from 2023 onwards
On 9 February 2023, Meryl, Martin and their co-star, Steve Martin, were pictured partying together at the after-party for the opening night of Pictures From Home on Broadway, while Only Murders was in production.
As soon as the series hit the streaming platforms, viewers were completely head over heels for the pair on-screen, and their chemistry caused many to speculate about their off-screen dynamic, resulting in a representative for Martin shutting down rumours about their relationship in early 2024, telling People magazine that they were “just very good friends, nothing more.”
In May 2024, Martin spoke more about their relationship with People, telling the publication: “The story with Meryl is that she phoned me and said, ‘I want to be on it’. They already planned that I would have a theatrical experience and there would be a love interest. So that was coincidental, but she just wanted to be on the show. She didn’t know about [the love story].”
Martin and Meryl’s relationship was announced much later
It wasn’t until March 2025 that their relationship was confirmed, as the pair had denied everything up until that point. However, Page Six was the first to report that they had seemingly been dating for “well over a year”, and that it had come as a surprise to them both, with neither having been actively searching for a relationship.
Two months later, they were pictured sharing a kiss while filming Only Murders in New York City – whether that particular public display of affection was in character or not is unknown.
Martin and Meryl’s previous relationships
Meryl has been married to Don Gummer since 1978, however last year, she revealed that the two had been separated for six years. They share four kids, Henry, 44, Mamie, 41, Grace, 38, and Louisa, 33.
Martin was previously married to Nancy Dolman, from 1980 until she died in 2010 aged 58, after a battle with ovarian cancer. They had three kids, Katherine, 40, Oliver, 38, and Henry, 35.
Katherine, Oliver and Henry all lead relatively private lives away from the spotlight, although Katherine did occasionally attend parties with her father. On Monday, 23 February, it was announced that Katherine had died by suicide, aged 42.
