Yesterday in Copenhagen, Queen Mary of Denmark showed that you can dress simply yet still make a striking impact, by mastering a styling trick Queen Máxima of the Netherlands knows well: pairing a minimalist outfit with a bold statement necklace. With just this one accessory, the entire look is transformed while still respecting protocol and her institutional role. Another major win for the Danish queen, who will celebrate her 22nd wedding anniversary on May 14.
A heart health event in Copenhagen
Mary applied this styling trick during the Danish Heart Association’s Research Award ceremony on March 26, where she serves as patron. The award was presented to clinical professor Eva Prescott of Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital for her work on the iPower project, which addresses an often-overlooked issue: women with chest pain frequently go undiagnosed and untreated effectively.
It was an emotional moment, as the Queen presented the award after receiving a bouquet from two young girls, with whom she chatted warmly, showcasing her approachable, down-to-earth demeanor.
A polished work look for the occasion
Focusing on her outfit, Mary blended timeless wardrobe staples with carefully chosen new pieces, items designed to be versatile and worn again in different ways. The result: a refined, functional look perfectly suited to the occasion.
The royal-approved wrap coat
One standout recycled piece was her white wrap-style coat, a royal favorite, crafted in cashmere and known as the “Kido” model by British label Joseph, founded by Joseph Ettedgui in 1966. She first debuted the coat on January 2, 2020, and has since worn it on multiple occasions, including her trip to Spain in November 2023, her state visit to Sweden in May 2024, Princess Isabella’s 18th birthday celebration in April 2025, and the New Year’s reception in January 2026.
Also recycled: her burgundy wrap blouse with voluminous sleeves by Danish designer Jesper Høvring, known for his bridal creations. She first wore it in April 2017, most recently during her official visit to Kenya in December 2025. Her snakeskin heels, with a 4-inch (10 cm) heel, have also been in her wardrobe since 2016.
New additions in Copenhagen
As for new pieces, Queen Mary debuted a blue midi skirt with a flared silhouette and a matching waist tie. Designed by South Korean label Rejina Pyo, the “Malia” model is versatile enough to pair with heels or flats. It’s currently on sale for €104 (approximately $115 USD).
She also carried a new burgundy leather clutch, the “Mortimer Clutch” by Anya Hindmarch, another luxury accessory now discounted to €550 (approximately $600 USD).
The mysterious necklace
However, the true standout element of her look was her bold, multi-colored stone necklace. Far more striking than a delicate chain or subtle pendant, this statement piece elevated the entire outfit. Its origin remains unknown, for now, but it’s clear this is the kind of accessory that completely transforms a look. And we’ll definitely be watching for its next appearance.
