The much-loved and dearly missed ’80s heartthrob was best known for his roles in Dirty Dancing opposite Jennifer Grey and Ghost with Demi Moore. But his earliest co-stars in life were the four siblings who shared his Houston childhood, learnt to dance alongside the Road House star.
We’re taking a look inside the Swayze family, many of whom also followed the beat to success in the studio or on the screen.
Patrick’s only elder sibling, Vicky, was also an actor and accomplished dancer
Vicky Swayze
The eldest Swayze sibling Vicky studied dance with her younger brother Patrick at their dance instructor mother’s school, the Swayze Dance Studio, “from the time [they] could walk”.
In his memoir, The Time of My Life, Patrick said the studio was like “a second home” for the pair, adding: “My mother never asked Vicky and me if we wanted to study dance — it was just expected of us.” Vicky died in December 1994.

Patrick starred in One Last Dance opposite his wife Lisa Niemi, who co-wrote and directed the 2003 film. The story follows three dance students forced to reunite in order to save their late teacher’s company.

Early childhood
Patrick opened up about his upbringing in his 2009 memoir The Time of My Life, saying that he and his siblings all “felt the constant pressure to perform”.
They nicknamed it “growing up Swayze”, which he summarises as “an almost manic drive to be the best, do the most, and lead the pack in whatever we attempted”. His mother Patsy was a prominent dance instructor in Patrick’s hometown of Houston and his father was a Golden Gloves boxer-turned-engineer.

Marriage to Lisa Niemi
Patrick met his wife of more than three decades at his mother’s dance studio and they tied the knot in 1975, when Patrick was 24 and Lisa Niemi was 19, both having taken places at the prestigious Joffrey Ballet.
They were happily married for 34 years and lived across two horse ranches – one outside Los Angeles and another in New Mexico. He told People in 2007: “We’ve always been a team. We raise horses together, run a music business and a wildlife preserve together. We have an unspoken language after all these years.”
