Glory at the Winter Olympics has so far evaded Team GB, but they’ll be hoping for the drought to end in the figure skating competition, which will be held on Wednesday evening.
Four British skaters will be hoping for the highest sporting accolade with Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson and Phebe Bekker and James Hernandez all aiming for the gold.
But what do you know about the figure skaters? Here’s everything about the Olympic hopefuls…
Lilah, who is partnered with Lewis Gibson, was born on 11 June 1999, and the 26-year-old has already had quite the Olympics, walking in as one of Team GB’s flagbearers. She and Lewis have already played third in the rhythm dancing, giving them a good shot of placing on the medal’s table.
“It was a moment and a memory that I will cherish forever,” she said after the achievement. “I’m so proud of us for doing exactly what we trained. The pressure was on and there was so much going on, and it was just so much fun!”
Lilah is already a highly-decorated athlete, having won eight British championships, and finishing in second place for two European championships.
Lilah’s skating partner in the competition is Lewis Gibson, 31, who is a seven-time British champion figure skater. The pair have been skating together since 2016.
Although he’s skated with Lilah for ten years, there’s nothing romantic going on between the pair, with Lewis happily married to husband Joshua Walsh. Speaking to Outsports in 2022 about coming out, Lewis said: “I’ve seen so many people who have gone before me and just living their truth and being so authentic when they perform in their sport and really just wanting that for myself as well.”
Phebe, 20, is making her Winter Olympics debut this time alongside her skating partner, James Hernandez, and the pair are double silver medallists in the British championships. The pair have been skating together since 2021, with Phebe picking up the sport when she was eight.
Speaking about their partnership, Phebe told Ice Dance.com: “We actually knew each other very briefly, we were in the same home rink for a while. I was a baby doing jumps and he was with his previous partners going to Junior Grand Prix. Our mums were friends!”
Phebe’s skating partner, James, 24, has previously tasted competition glory, having won the British Junior National Championship in 2020 with previous partner, Emily Rose Brown.
Speaking to The News and Star ahead of his Olympics debut, he said: “We are in a very privileged position in our discipline and in our sport that for a few minutes you can take people out of your world and hopefully get enveloped and engulfed in what they are watching,” he said.
“Hopefully when you take strong themes like Romeo and Juliet, and previous free dances we have done, you have a chance to get them to believe that story and take them out of what can sometimes be a depressing world. It is our job as athletes and performers to take people along with that.”
