Melanie Brown has penned a heartfelt tribute to her “brave” friend Victoria Beckham on a special date amid the ongoing Beckham family rift. The singer shared a throwback photo alongside Victoria and the rest of her Spice Girls “sisters” – Geri Halliwell-Horner, Emma Bunton and Melanie Chisholm – as she gushed about their “courage” and “integrity” on International Women’s Day.
“On international women’s day I want to celebrate just SOME of the amazing women who mean soooooo much to me for their courage and bravery, never wavering in there integrity, paving the way for other women even at the cost of themselves and being all round unstoppable,” she wrote in a social media post on Sunday. Mel B also gave a shoutout to her mother Andrea Brown and other women throughout history, including activist Marsha P Johnson, Swedish singer Neneh Cherry, American poet Maya Angelou, author Louise Gannon and Gisèle Pelicot.
“That’s a lot of GIRL POWER. Our voices will be heard !!!!!!!” she signed off the post. The empowering message comes amid Victoria’s ongoing estrangement with her eldest son Brooklyn Beckham, who made several bombshell claims about his parents in a scathing social media post in January, including that they tried to “ruin” his relationship with his wife Nicola Peltz and that Victoria had “hijacked” his first wedding dance in 2022.
Mel B looks back on Spice Girls days
From topping the charts with hits like ‘Wannabe’ to inspiring fashion choices around the world, the Spice Girls truly left their mark on the ’90s. Three decades later, Melanie Brown has reminisced on the highlights from her time in the girl group – including the band’s famous interaction with King Charles when they broke royal protocol – with a new TikTok on Saturday.
The singer jumped on a recent trend taking over social media where celebrities, including Reese Witherspoon, Kevin Bacon and Kristin Davis, have posted heartwarming photo montages of themselves in the ’90s, set to The Goo Goo Dolls’ emotional 1998 track ‘Iris’. Mel B’s version featured a slideshow of pictures from the decade alongside her Spice Girls bandmates, Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell-Horner, Emma Bunton and Melanie Chisholm.
“Ooooo the 90’s,” Mel B captioned the throwback album of the group at award shows together, on the cover of a magazine, performing on stage, and meeting King Charles, who was then the Prince of Wales, in 1997. The Spice Girls met the royal during a concert for The Prince’s Trust at the Manchester Opera House, and famously broke protocol when Mel B and Geri both gave Charles a kiss on the cheek in greeting.
The Spice Girls met the royal for a second time that same year alongside Nelson Mandela during a visit to South Africa, which Mel B included a photo of in her social media montage.
Fans reminisce on ‘best times’
Mel B wasn’t the only one with feelings about the girl group, as the video also prompted fans to reminisce about the Spice Girls’ days and what the band meant to them.
“The best times ever! What I wouldn’t give to go back to the 90s and my first concert ever, Spice Girls!!” one person wrote, while another gushed: “What a time to be alive! Thanks for the memories”.
“The power you five had in the 90’s with ‘girl power’, such an inspiration,” someone else wrote.
The Spice Girls’ famous King Charles meeting
When the girl group first met Charles in May 1997, they were on top of the world following the release of their debut album and single ‘Wannabe’, which skyrocketed to the top of the UK charts. Their meeting with the future king has become a memorable pop culture moment after Geri planted a kiss on the royal’s cheek, despite royal protocol typically including a handshake and formal behaviour.
“I feel like Prince Charles, his royal highness, is part of the landscape of the Spice Girls journey,” Geri told HELLO! in 2019 at the annual Prince’s Trust Invest in Futures event. “We consider him a Spice Boy. He was there from the beginning, and to see him just grow and shine, our future King, I think it’s brilliant what he does.”
“I really admire him,” she continued. “As a representation of our country. I feel we should be really proud of what he does. He’s a modern man, he’s a modern royal, he has consciousness.”
