Melissa McCarthy has delighted fans with a rare glimpse into her past, sharing a joyful high school throwback that perfectly captures the spark that would one day make her a Hollywood favourite.

Taking to Instagram, the Bridesmaids star posted a candid photo from her teenage years, beaming alongside a close friend, offering a glimpse of the charisma and warmth that would later define her career. But it was her heartfelt caption that truly resonated.

“To the person in High School that said ‘you are better than’, ‘you can do this’ and ‘get on that damn stage and do what you do’. You changed my life, I am who I am because you were born! Happiest birthday to @brian_atwood,” she wrote.

The post was a touching tribute to her longtime friend, designer Brian Atwood, who she credits as one of the earliest people to recognise her potential and push her towards the stage.

Melissa went on to share a charming anecdote from their early days in New York, revealing just how influential his advice continued to be as she pursued her dreams.

“Also when we moved to New York, he said ‘you cannot wear cheap shoes!’ Cut to my parents paying off my first credit card bill!!! I love you!!!”

Fans were quick to flood the comments, not only charmed by the nostalgic photo but also moved by the story behind it.

During an interview with People in 2023, Melissa explained there are two different versions of herself: “There’s two versions of me. If I’m taking off my [make-up], I do all my good stuff and the hot towel and the whole thing. If I come [with a full face of make-up], this is how I go to bed,” and crossed her arms..

“I go to bed like a corpse,” the Mike and Molly star continued. “I lie back, and I wake up the next morning, and I’m like, ‘Good for me, I can sleep and not move.”

However, she explained that her make-up artist does not at all approve of this ritual, as it can lead to clogged pores and breakouts, adding: “My make-up [artist] is like, ‘Oh, that’s not good. You should wash it all off.’ I’m like, ‘Look at what you did today. I can’t do this.’ So I sleep like an absolute corpse, and I wake up, and I go and look in the mirror, and it’s like, ‘That’s a full lash, girl.’ It’s a full lash on a Tuesday.”

The actress has been incredibly open about the wellness journey she has been on in recent years, where she has been putting her health first. She has lost 95 lbs, but explained that the key to her health, after years of yo-yo dieting, has been to stop “worrying” continuously about her weight.

“I finally said [to myself], ‘Oh, for God’s sake, stop worrying about it,’, and it may be the best thing I’ve ever done,” she said during an appearance on CBS Mornings. “I truly stopped worrying about [my weight]. I stopped over-analyzing, over-thinking, over-doing anything.
