“Well, I hope you’re having a good day,” Michael began as he spoke directly to the camera. “I just got some good news; The New York Times has picked One Helluva Ride as one of its choices for the month of October. That’ll be a kick in the [expletive]!”

“Thrilled to see One Helluva Ride named by @nytimes as one of the 29 nonfiction books to read this fall!” he added in the caption. “What a ride it’s been, and we’re just getting started.”

A third chimed in: “You look good,” while another said: “Such a stud.”

A must-read

The Oscar-winning actor’s memoir, which drops on October 6, delves into his struggles with his health, his family and his fame.

“After being asked for many years, I’ve finally decided it’s time to tell my story on my own terms,” Michael shared in a statement. “Not the highlight reel, not the version shaped by headlines or box office numbers, but the real one.”

“I’ve lived a life that unfolded in public while being deeply private at the same time, and there’s a difference,” he continued. “This is about where I came from, what I fought against, and what I chose for myself. Fame can blur the truth; this is my attempt to bring it back into focus.”

Grand Central Publishing Editor-in-Chief Colin Dickerman shared in his statement that Michael’s memoir is a “gift” and a “front-row seat” to his fascinating life.

The book will also delve into his decades-long romance with Catherine Zeta-Jones

“Growing up in the shadow of a Hollywood legend, navigating a risk-taking career that has spanned six decades and included films that defined our culture, privately fighting health and family battles while in the glare of the spotlight – Douglas’ life is a towering achievement in perseverance,” Colin said.

“That he has chosen to tell his story with such honesty and intimacy is a gift to his fans as well as everyone who wants a front-row seat to Hollywood’s most turbulent and thrilling years.”

The 81-year-old is semi-retired

Michael has taken a step back from acting in recent years, only taking on occasional jobs like 2025’s Looking Through Water. The father of three shared in a press conference at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival that he would only come back to Hollywood for a project that he was passionate about.

“I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realized I had to stop,” he explained.

He will return to the screen in White Lies

“I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set. I have no real intentions of going back. I say I’m not retired because if something special came up, I’d go back, but otherwise, no.”

Despite this statement, Michael will return to our screens for the upcoming family drama White Lies, co-starring Willem Dafoe, Ellen Barkin, Homer Gere and Yvonne Chapman.
