Miley Cyrus is teasing some exciting news for Disney Channel fans. The musician and actress is preparing for her return as “Hannah Montana,” the role that changed her career and made her into one of her generation’s biggest icons. Cyrus will be starring in a new “Hannah Montana” special celebrating the show’s 20th anniversary. The event will feature numerous performances and surprises, including a cameo from fellow Disney icon Selena Gomez.
The information was revealed in an interview with Variety, with the special’s host, Alex Cooper, arranging Gomez’s appearance, surprising Cyrus on set.
“I love Selena, but I didn’t know how much our friendship meant to the fans,” Cyrus said. Gomez appeared on three episodes of the “Hannah Montana” series, playing the role of Mickayla Sketch, one of Hannah’s pop star rivals.
According to Disney, more familiar faces will be featured, even though they haven’t been revealed. Cyrus’ parents, Billy Ray and Tish, will be featured on the special.
Cyrus’ evolving perspective on Hannah
In recent years, Miley Cyrus has opened up about her evolving perspective regarding the character and TV show that made her famous. When she was younger, she wanted to draw some distance between herself and her Disney persona, but in recent years, she’s taken on a different approach. In fact, she played a key part in the special coming together.
“I learned this terrible habit — but I actually think it was good advice — from Dolly,” she said, referring to her godmother Dolly Parton. “She told me that if you want something to happen, promote it before it exists. Then no one can say no. So I just started promoting a ‘Hannah Montana’ 20th-anniversary special that literally did not exist.”
“I think even Disney sometimes forgets the connection between me and Hannah,” she said. “It’s not just a TV show. I see daily how important Hannah is to people. When I travel, people bring me ‘Hannah’ merch. They ask, ‘Are you ever going to do another season?’”
The “Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special” premieres on Disney+ and Hulu this March 24th, exactly 20 years since the show debuted on Disney Channel. The show will feature an in-depth interview between Cooper and Cyrus, and Cyrus revisiting key sets, moments, and memories from the original series.
