Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak are best friends who go way back to the beginning of their beloved sitcom, The Office. The duo met in 2004 when they were hired as writers and actors on ‘The Office’, and began dating in 2005, shortly after their characters, Kelly Kapoor and Ryan Howard, started their own relationship. The romance quickly fizzled, but they stayed close as dear friends.
Throughout the years, as The Office continued, their characters had an on-again, off-again relationship that included getting married and divorced in the span of a week, and eventually running off together in the 2013 series finale (and ditching Ryan’s baby). Because of their on-screen chemistry, fans are obsessed with them off-screen, and convinced that they’re secretly together. They attended two Oscars together, the Met Gala, and each others’ premieres. But they maintain that they’re just friends.
In 2025, the best friends attended Mindy’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, where she shared that B.J. is an “important and integral part of my family,” according to People.
