Miss Universe hopeful Wualys Aquino found dead in Honduras

Wualys Fuentes Aquino, a rising Honduran model who recently competed in the Miss Universe Tegucigalpa 2026 pageant, was found dead inside her apartment in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Aquino was widely reported to be 23 years old and had finished as runner-up in the regional beauty pageant only weeks before her death. Her body was discovered on July 20 after concerned relatives went to her home when they had been unable to reach her for several days.

The Miss Universe Tegucigalpa organization confirmed Aquino’s death on July 21 and expressed condolences to her family and friends. The organization remembered the young contestant for supporting the women around her and making an impact during her time in the competition.

What Happened to Wualys Aquino?

Aquino was found at her residence in the Altos del Trapiche area of Tegucigalpa, according to local Honduran reports.

Family members reportedly became concerned after going several days without hearing from her. They eventually went to the apartment, where Aquino was found unresponsive, and authorities were notified.

Police investigators, the Public Ministry, and forensic authorities became involved in the case, with Aquino’s body transported for a forensic examination.

Early international reports said authorities had not ruled out either natural causes or possible foul play while the investigation was in its initial stages. However, subsequent reporting from Honduras provided a significant update.

Preliminary Autopsy Reportedly Found No Signs of Violent Death

A preliminary forensic examination reportedly found no indications that Aquino suffered a violent death, according to Honduran newspaper La Prensa.

Forensic officials said additional laboratory analyses were still needed before the official cause of death could be determined.

Although early reports noted that investigators had not initially excluded foul play, the preliminary forensic findings did not indicate violence. 

Who Was Wualys Fuentes Aquino?

Aquino’s death came shortly after a major achievement in her modeling and pageant career. She competed in Miss Universe Tegucigalpa 2026, a regional competition connected to the Miss Universe Honduras pageant, and finished as runner-up. Luciana Núñez won the competition.

Outside the pageant world, Aquino was pursuing her education while developing her modeling career. Reports said she studied International Marketing and Social Work at the National Autonomous University of Honduras.

She was also interested in boxing, traveling, and modeling, regularly sharing parts of her life and career on social media.

Her participation in the 2026 competition carried particular personal significance. Aquino had previously discussed experiencing bullying because of her body type as a teenager. Following the pageant, she reflected publicly on developing greater confidence and accepting herself.

Wualys Aquino Had a Message About Women and Leadership

Aquino also used her appearance at Miss Universe Tegucigalpa to speak about what she believed a beauty queen should represent.

During the competition’s question round, she explained that she wanted to be remembered as a queen who stood among people rather than above them. She described a crown as something that could be used to encourage leadership and help other women succeed.

Those comments gained renewed attention in Honduras following her death.

The Miss Universe Tegucigalpa organization similarly remembered Aquino as someone willing to support her fellow contestants rather than focusing solely on her own success.  “The Miss Universe Tegucigalpa organization deeply mourns the passing of our runner-up, Wualys Aquino; we wish to express our condolences to her family and friends,” the organization wrote on Instagram.

“This news has deeply affected us all, as it happened so unexpectedly. Wualys was a woman who not only shone herself but also helped her fellow contestants shine. She showed us that she was always willing to help; she never said no when it came to supporting her peers,” the statement continued.

Wualys Aquino’s Mother Speaks About Her Death

Aquino’s mother, Lilia Aquino, later spoke publicly about losing her daughter.

According to People, she was in the United States when she learned about Wualys’ death. She described receiving the devastating news and immediately communicating with relatives in Honduras as she tried to understand what had happened.

“I’ve had plenty of time alone to weep for my little girl,” Lilia said. “From the moment I got the call while I was in the States, I told my sister not to let anyone touch her because I was coming back for her.”

Adding: “I still feel like she’s close to me.”

Friends, followers, and members of the Honduran pageant community also shared condolences after Aquino’s death was announced.

What Is Wualys Aquino’s Official Cause of Death?

As of the latest reporting, an official cause of death had not been publicly established.

Forensic authorities had completed the medical-legal examination but were waiting for specialized laboratory results needed to determine the cause and manner of Aquino’s death. Honduran reporting said preliminary findings showed no evidence of a violent death.

Until those results are finalized or authorities release additional information, claims about exactly what caused Aquino’s death remain unconfirmed.

Now, her family and the Honduran pageant community are mourning her sudden death while awaiting definitive answers.
