Miss Universe, the war, and the country that became home

At 90, Christiane Martel has finally put her extraordinary life on the page. Her self-titled memoir, released this year, traces a path that explores the deprivations of wartime France to a Miss Universe crown, taking her through the soundstages of Hollywood and into six decades at the center of Mexican political life. It is, by her own account, a story she alone could tell.

“I write because it’s my story. It was a life of so many moments — I still have much more to tell,” she said in an interview with EL PAÍS.

Born Christiane Magnani, Martel’s earliest years unfolded in the shadow of the Second World War. Her family lived through the occupation, and her father spent time in a concentration camp. When he was released, the household was left with little, and Christiane went to work to help make ends meet. She was still a child.

“I had to work from the time I was very small. They couldn’t pay me, but they’d give me milk, they’d give me butter. I was happy just to bring something home to eat,” she said.

From provincial pageants to the world stage

Years later, as a striking teenager, Martel entered a local beauty contest and climbed steadily through regional titles until she was named France’s representative at Miss Universe.

She arrived in the United States when she was only 17, barely speaking English. She won anyway, taking the crown at the pageant held in Long Beach, California, on July 17, 1953. France has claimed the Miss Universe crown only twice: with Martel in 1953, and years later with Iris Mittenaere, in 2016.

Hollywood, then Mexico

For Martel, the crown opened doors in Hollywood, where she appeared in films including “Yankee Pasha,” “Rails into Laramie,” and “So This Is Paris.” When that period of her life concluded, she headed to Mexico in search of new work and quickly became one of the most striking faces on Mexican screens, starring in films like “Corazón Salvaje” and “Bataclán Mexicano.”

Mexico gave Martel more than a career. In 1961 she married Miguel Alemán Velasco — the businessman, politician, and son of former Mexican president Miguel Alemán Valdés (1946–1952) — and built a life there that has spanned 65 years. The couple marked their platinum wedding anniversary this past March.

A family, and a second public life

Christiane and Miguel raised four children together — Carla, Claudia, Mónica, and Miguel Alemán Magnani. The family has grown over the years, including 17 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her husband’s political career gave Martel a second public role of her own. When Alemán Velasco served as governor of Veracruz from 1998 to 2004, Martel served as president of the state’s DIF system (the family welfare agency). She exchanged a life once defined by the beauty industry for one of public service.
