Marius Borg Høiby made an emotional appearance in court this week as his high-profile trial continues at the Oslo District Court. Borg took a moment to strongly defend his mother, Mette-Marit, and his stepfather, Crown Prince Haakon.

The case, one of the most closely followed legal proceedings in Norway in decades, centers on allegations brought by his Nora Haukland, his former partner,  who accused him of violence and abuse during their relationship.

Borg denies the most serious accusations, including four charges of rape.

The emotional defense of his parents

On day 14 of the trial, which is scheduled for seven weeks, the spotlight unexpectedly shifted to Norway’s future king and queen. During testimony, Haukland alleged that she once warned Haakon and Mette-Marit that Borg needed professional help. According to her account, they responded that his struggles were not her responsibility.

Borg fiercely disputed that version. “That story is absurd to hear,” he said, per the Norwegian outlet VG. “Now she’s going to involve my parents,” he continued, breaking down in tears.

“I don’t know anyone who has worked harder for me to be okay. Mom and Haakon have only ever been the kindest people in the world, both to Nora and to me. The way they’re being described here makes me incredibly angry,” he said, apologizing as he struggled to continue.

The presiding judge briefly paused the proceedings to allow him to compose himself. Borg also defended his biological father, Morten Borg, saying that he was “fantastically kind” to Haukland.

Allegations and counterclaims

Haukland testified earlier this week, revealing that their relationship, which lasted from spring 2022 to summer 2023, was marked by manipulation, “love bombing,” and episodes of violence. She detailed several incidents, including one that allegedly took place at Skaugum, the official residence of Norway’s crown prince and princess.

Borg claims that any aggression in the relationship was mutual.

The case has drawn intense scrutiny, not only because of the severity of the allegations but also due to Borg’s connection to Norway’s royal family. Though he is not a working royal, his ties to the monarchy have placed the institution under unprecedented pressure.

A trial with broad implications

The legal proceedings follow a year-long police investigation involving extensive digital evidence and witness testimonies. Prosecutors initially filed 32 charges; the number later increased to 38, with nine alleged victims.

The charges include four counts of rape, which have all been denied by Borg, as well as allegations of violence, threats, unlawful filming, harassment, and drug-related offenses. He has admitted to some acts of violence and property damage, but continues to reject the sexual assault accusations.

The trial unfolds at a sensitive moment for Norway’s monarchy, already facing public concern over the health of King Harald V.

As testimony continues, the emotional courtroom exchange has become one of the most talked-about moments in what many Norwegian outlets have dubbed the “trial of the century.”
