Investigators have revealed new information about a key piece of evidence in the case of Nancy Guthrie, who disappeared from her home in Tucson, Arizona, on February 1.
The 84-year-old mother of Today star Savannah Guthrie failed to show up to her usual church service the morning after a games night with her other daughter, Annie, prompting the family to report her as missing.
In the weeks following her disappearance, authorities have been following several potential leads to her whereabouts. A major breakthrough came on February 10 when the FBI released footage obtained from Nancy’s doorbell camera that showed a man in a black ski mask attempting to dismantle the device the same morning that she was allegedly taken.
The man wore black gloves and had a black backpack on, which was identified as a 25-liter “Ozark Trail Hiker Pack” exclusive to Walmart. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos shared with NBC that investigators were now looking at the backpack from a different angle.
“We’ve now learned that maybe it wasn’t purchased out of Walmart,” he explained. “That backpack new, is exclusive to Walmart, but who’s to say I didn’t buy it and put it on eBay?…That’s what we’re looking at.”
He added that authorities were yet to identify the brand of clothing the suspect was wearing, but he was confident they were on the right track. “I think that investigators are definitely closer. We’ve got a lot of intel, a lot of leads, but now it’s time to just go to work.”
Sheriff Nanos also addressed the clip released by Fox News Digital, taken from a doorbell camera around 2.5 miles away from Nancy’s home, that saw a car drive past at 2:30 a.m., which fits into the suspected timeline of her disappearance.

“Look, what I would tell you is this: we’re aware of it, and we’re looking into it, just like any other piece of evidence,” he told NBC. “We’re looking at that vehicle as well as hundreds of thousands of other vehicles that were out driving that time of day.”
The sheriff’s update comes just a day after Savannah, her sister, Annie Guthrie, and Annie’s husband, Tommaso Cioni, visited the memorial outside their mother’s house to pay their respects.
“We feel the love and prayers from our neighbors, from the Tucson community and from around the country,” Savannah wrote on Instagram, alongside a photo of the memorial.
“Please don’t stop praying and hoping with us. Bring her home.” The siblings also left a note at the memorial, which read: “Momma, We miss you so much! Our hearts are broken. We are standing on ash, scorched earth! But, Mom, though we are surrounded by so much darkness and uncertainty, our love burns bright.”
According to authorities, the doorbell camera outside Nancy’s home was disconnected at 1:47 a.m. on February 1, and her pacemaker disconnected from her phone app at 2:28 a.m. Drops of her blood were discovered outside the front door and inside the house, and investigators shared their belief that Nancy was likely abducted.
