The breakup of the Jonas Brothers more than ten years ago ultimately gave the group a chance to reflect, grow, and eventually reunite stronger than before.
The trio went their separate ways in 2013 before reuniting in 2019, marking their comeback with a performance on the TODAY plaza. Since then, they’ve released three new albums and resumed touring. During the hiatus, Nick Jonas pursued a solo career, releasing two albums and expanding into acting with roles in films such as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level, alongside Dwayne Johnson.
Now promoting his new album, Sunday Best, Nick said the time away from his brothers, Kevin Jonas and Joe Jonas, allowed him to reflect on their relationship and priorities.
“We’ve had a lot of time to, kind of, heal,” he told Willie Geist during the March 1 Sunday Sitdown.
“It was important for all of us to take that step away from this thing we were doing together for, you know, 12 years and just say, ‘OK. Who are we? And what’s important to us?’ And eventually, the answer became, ‘Well, I’m a brother who needs his brothers, and who also has the freedom to be an individual in that.’”
Nick, who shares 4-year-old daughter Malti with his wife, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, also said stepping back from the band helped him recognize his own potential as a solo artist.
“Being clumped into a group — it’s hard to know who you are and to feel like you have a voice of your own,” he said.
“When things started to connect with things like ‘Jealous’ and ‘Chains,’ and those early solo songs, I was relieved because I was like, ‘Oh, I can do this,’” he said.
Today, the Jonas Brothers are celebrating two decades together with a major tour. One standout stop included a performance at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, close to their hometown of Wyckoff.
“To look out and see that sea of people in our hometown stadium was incredible,” Nick Jonas said. “And we took a moment after the show and just kind of looked at each other and said, ‘How did we get here?’ And the answer is: I don’t know, but I’m glad it did.”
