Nicolas Cage has long embraced the unexpected, but perhaps nothing reflects his famously eccentric personality quite like the striking pyramid tomb he has already reserved for himself in one of New Orleans’ most historic cemeteries.

Standing nine feet tall among centuries-old above-ground mausoleums in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, the gleaming white pyramid has become one of the city’s most unusual tourist attractions, attracting visitors curious about the Hollywood star’s unconventional choice of final resting place.

Purchased by the National Treasure actor in 2010 as one of two cemetery plots, the futuristic monument couldn’t look more different from the weathered crypts surrounding it.

A monument unlike any other

While St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is renowned for its ornate historic tombs dating back to the late 18th century, Cage’s minimalist pyramid stands in stark contrast.

The pristine white structure is inscribed with the Latin phrase “Omnia Ab Uno,” meaning “Everything From One,” a cryptic message that has fuelled years of speculation.

Its clean geometric lines echo ancient Egyptian architecture, with many believing the design reflects the actor’s well-documented fascination with mysticism, symbolism and the mysteries of history.

Unlike the surrounding mausoleums, weathered by more than two centuries of New Orleans heat and humidity, Nicolas’ monument appears almost futuristic.

Why did Nicolas want a pyramid?

The actor has never publicly explained why he chose the distinctive design, leaving fans to develop their own theories.

Some believe the pyramid is a playful nod to his National Treasure films, while others have linked it to longstanding internet speculation surrounding secret societies and ancient symbolism.

Perhaps the most popular theory is that the pyramid represents immortality, an architectural form famously associated with eternity.

Others point to its location near the tomb of legendary Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau, suggesting the placement was a deliberate choice.

A special connection to New Orleans

Nicolas’ relationship with New Orleans extends well beyond the cemetery.

The Oscar winner has long spoken about his affection for the Louisiana city, describing its unique blend of culture, spirituality and history as deeply inspiring.

Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he donated $1 million to relief efforts, helping residents rebuild after one of the city’s darkest chapters.

His fascination with New Orleans also led him to purchase one of its most infamous properties.

The haunted mansion that captivated Nicolas

In 2007, Nicolas bought the notorious LaLaurie Mansion in the French Quarter, a grand residence infamous for its disturbing history.

The mansion once belonged to Madame Delphine LaLaurie, whose horrific abuse of enslaved people was uncovered after a devastating fire in 1834.

Over the years, the property has become one of New Orleans’ most famous haunted locations, with countless reports of unexplained noises, ghostly apparitions and eerie encounters.

He owned the mansion for only three years before it was lost to foreclosure in 2009 during his well-publicised financial troubles.

A lasting mystery

Local folklore has since woven together the actor’s two New Orleans landmarks. Some believe he deliberately chose a burial plot close to Marie Laveau’s tomb in the hope of gaining spiritual protection from the alleged supernatural energy associated with the LaLaurie Mansion.

Whether there’s any truth to those stories remains impossible to know, and Nicolas himself has never commented publicly on the speculation.

He has, however, spoken warmly about New Orleans itself, telling The Advocate: “I’ve gone through so many changes in Louisiana. I feel like I grew up there… New Orleans is not like anywhere else in the world. There’s a confluence of culture, spirituality, cuisine… it’s its own special place.”
