Penélope Cruz made a dramatic entrance in a white feathered gown at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of La bola negra.

The 52-year-old Spanish actress commanded attention at the Princess of Wales Theatre on September 15 in a sculptural creation by Tamara Ralph.

The fitted white gown, from the designer’s Fall 2026 Couture collection, hugged Cruz’s silhouette before cascading into a feather-covered skirt, with wispy ostrich feathers also framing the neckline and shoulders.

The elaborate texture gave the monochromatic look plenty of movement, while its body-skimming silhouette kept the ensemble sleek beneath all the volume. Cruz completed the look with white platform sandals and gold jewelry, including a statement necklace and bracelet.

Her beauty look was equally polished. The Oscar winner wore her brunette hair swept into an elegant updo, leaving her signature bangs and a few face-framing strands loose.

She opted for glowing bronzed skin, defined lashes and softly lined nude lips, allowing the dramatic dress to remain the focus. A glossy red manicure provided an unexpected pop of color.

A major moment for ‘La bola negra’:

The glamorous appearance came during an especially significant week for Cruz and the film. Just hours after its Toronto premiere, the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences announced on September 16 that La bola negra had officially been selected to represent Spain in the Best International Feature Film race at the 99th Academy Awards.

Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known collectively as Los Javis, the film had previously been shortlisted alongside Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s El ser querido and Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s Los domingos.

Its selection does not mean the movie has been nominated for an Oscar just yet. The international feature shortlist will be announced December 15, followed by the nominations on January 21, 2027.

The film has already built significant momentum on the festival circuit. La bola negra premiered in competition at Cannes earlier this year, where Calvo and Ambrossi won the Best Director prize.

The sprawling drama follows three generations of men across 1932, 1937 and 2017, exploring desire, repression, family secrets and LGBTQ+ history in Spain. Its title comes from an unfinished work by Federico García Lorca, whose legacy serves as an important inspiration for the story.

Penélope’s busy awards season:

Cruz’s involvement in La bola negra is only part of what is shaping up to be a particularly busy awards season for the Spanish star. She arrived at TIFF with three films generating attention this year. La bola negra, Florian Zeller’s Bunker and Olivia Wilde’s The Invite.

Variety has already highlighted the unusual possibility of Cruz having multiple performances in the conversation during the same awards season.

Toronto also celebrated Cruz’s career beyond her individual films. The actress received the TIFF Special Tribute Award during the festival, recognizing her body of work and contribution to international cinema.

During her acceptance speech, she thanked collaborators including Zeller, Calvo, Ambrossi, Wilde and longtime collaborator Pedro Almodóvar.

For La bola negra, the journey is only beginning. Following its festival run, the movie will open in Spanish theaters on September 25. Netflix has acquired North American rights, with a U.S. theatrical release beginning October 16 before the film arrives on the platform in the U.S. and Canada on December 2.
