The royal family are no strangers to the sporting world, whether they’re cheering on from the sidelines at Wimbledon and the World Cup or privately practising their own favourite athletics.

And it seems that the Prince and Princess of Wales’s children are no different. Yesterday, the couple briefly resurfaced from their annual summer break on Saturday for an outing to the 2026 Commonwealth Games with their three children.

During the sporting extravaganza, it was revealed that the youngest of the Waleses’ children, Prince Louis, eight, has a penchant for practising one particular skill: the handstand.

Louis’s latest hobby

Though it seems not all of his siblings are impressed with his efforts so far. While speaking with gymnasts Abigail and Emily Roper, who both won bronze medals earlier in the week, Kate revealed that Louis has been practising handstands.

Including her youngest son in the conversation, Kate turned to Louis and said: “Louis, you’re perfecting your handstand at the moment.”

He answered, “A bit,” before adding, “Charlotte says I’m not very good.” Meanwhile, Charlotte, 11, proudly admitted she could successfully do a handstand.

Her father said she “loves ballet and gymnastics.” Kate also revealed that Charlotte’s favourite part was “the floor”, adding that she also “likes her dancing.” Kate asked the gymnasts how they train for competition. “And what are you doing? As Charlotte was asking, are you doing a lot of stretching and conditioning?”

Both nodded, confirming that they had been practising both to ensure they were strong and flexible before the Games. When George was asked about his own handstand skills, he answered, “I’m rubbish at anything that involves flexibility.”

After hearing about Charlotte’s passion for gymnastics, the Welsh gymnasts offered her a Team Wales leotard that both of them had signed. The family were even asking to help with updating the medal table after two additional gold wins for Team Wales. William volunteered Louis to take on the task.

Louis’s first sports day

During the conversation, Louis also revealed that he had recently taken part in his first-ever sports day at school. Speaking for his brother, George, 13, said that his favourite event was the javelin.

William and Kate were also surprised to learn that Louis also has a penchant for the high jump. After being told, Kate turned to her son to ask if he liked the high jump, to which he moodily offered a one-word response: “Yeah”.

Saturday’s jam-packed day at the Commonwealth Games marked the first time the three royal children had visited Scotland publicly, and the first time Prince Louis had been old enough to attend a major sporting event.
