The UK celebrated Mothering Sunday on March 15 this year, weeks earlier than Mother’s Day in most other countries. Among the many tributes posted across social media, the Prince of Wales’ message stood out.

William shared a photograph taken at Highgrove House in 1984. In it, a 2-year-old William is seen standing beside Princess Diana, as the two enjoy themselves in a field of flowers. The snapshot captured a tender moment between mother and son, reviving one of the sweetest memories of William’s childhood. The tribute arrives ahead of a meaningful milestone: Princess Diana would have celebrated her 65th birthday this July 1.

“Remembering my mother, today and every day,” wrote William. “Thinking of all of those who are remembering someone they love today. Happy Mother’s Day. W.”

The simple gesture drew warm reactions online, with followers praising William for honoring Diana’s memory and for sharing a personal memory with the world. For many observers, the decision to share the photo highlights the enduring role Diana continues to play in William’s life, showcasing the values he hopes to pass on to his own children.

The tribute comes during a sensitive period for the British monarchy, following the recent arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and the renewed scrutiny regarding his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

For the second year in a row, Kate Middleton and her children did not appear in any official Mother’s Day posts.

Their absence has not gone unnoticed, especially after the intense media attention surrounding the 2024 Mother’s Day photograph when Princess of Wales shared a family portraitthat had been digitally edited.

At the time, Kate addressed the situation and took responsibility. “Like many amateur photographers, I occasionally experiment with editing,” she wrote. “I wanted to apologize for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday may have caused.”

The year before, the Princess of Wales had broken with tradition by posting a Mother’s Day tribute that did not feature her or her children. Instead, she focused on a message celebrating nature. “Over the past year, nature has been our sanctuary,” reads the post. “This Mother’s Day, let us celebrate Mother Nature and recognize how our connection to the natural world can help nurture our inner selves and remind us of the role we play within the rich tapestry of life.”

Since first becoming a mother in July 2013, Kate had traditionally marked Mother’s Day with family photographs. The recent shift in tone reflects a more reflective and symbolic approach to the occasion.
