The Prince of Wales doesn’t skip leg day. Broadcaster and DJ Greg James playfully praised William’s “royal glutes” after the Prince joined him for a grueling cycling challenge for Comic Relief, one of the UK’s most famous charities.
William rode alongside the radio host last Tuesday for part of the journey, resulting in some humorous moments. “Very powerful legs, the royal glutes were firing on all cylinders,” said James. “They really were. He was a beast on there. I think he’s a keen cyclist anyway, and he refused to wear lycra. I mean, he’s a smart man. I can’t believe it happened. He really didn’t need to do that. This is the thing I keep thinking about.”
James also highlighted the deeper message behind the challenge. “But what I love about that is that he got the message we were trying to put out, talking about safety nets and making sure that there are people to catch you if you fall.”
“Luckily, I didn’t fall off the bike with him. Otherwise, I’d have been sent to the tower,” he joked. “I’m really pleased that he chose to amplify that message, really. It sent the whole thing supersonic.”
A remarkable fundraising effort
For his work with Comic Relief, James cycled 1,000 kilometers, finishing at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh. By the end of the challenge, he had raised more than $5 million for the charity. “Four million pounds, I can barely bring myself to say it, it feels so strange,” James said.
The Prince of Wales surprised Greg by joining him during the Yorkshire leg of the journey, cycling alongside him for around 40 minutes as the two rode through the scenic countryside.
William praised the broadcaster’s efforts and his partnership with Comic Relief. “What you’ve done is set an example about helping out. That’s the thing,” said William, as reported by The Daily Mail.
“What you’ve done is set an example about helping out. That’s the thing. It’s volunteering some of your time, putting yourself through a bit of pain at the same time, and supporting others.”
“It’s something we do very well in this country, but we don’t really shout about it enough. This challenge helps everyone see that. And it’s an amazing team effort. Huge well done, Greg.”
James later admitted he never expected the royal to take him up on his invitation. “What an incredible surprise. When I recorded a radio show with him recently, I joked that he was more than welcome to come along and ride the tandem, but I didn’t think he’d take me seriously,” he said.
“It’s been completely surreal, but so kind of him to take the time to help spread the message about supporting the most vulnerable. He didn’t have to jump on and stare at my back for 40 minutes, but I’m so grateful he did. Unforgettable.”
“I didn’t kill the future King William, thank you very much,” he said with a laugh. “It was an absolute pleasure.”
