Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands was surrounded by family on the day of her college graduation ceremony. The 21-year-old royal, who began her studies at the University of Amsterdam in 2022, celebrated her graduation from the school’s Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics (PPLE) program on Monday at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

The Dutch Royal House shared a picture of the Princess of Orange sporting her graduation cap and holding a certificate of attendance for participation in the PPLE graduation ceremony, along with a photo of Amalia with her parents, Queen Maxima and King Willem-Alexander, her younger sisters, Princess Alexia and Princess Ariane, and her paternal grandmother, Princess Beatrix, who were all present for the ceremony on July 14.

The future Queen’s final thesis, titled “Beyond Disclosure: Bridging the Gap Between the Artificial Intelligence Act and the Charter of Fundamental Rights with Deepfaked Bodies,” examined the tension between AI legislation and human rights.

The Royal House noted on Monday (translated to English), “The University of Amsterdam marks the end of the bachelor’s program with this traditional ceremony.” However, because of the Princess’ broken arm, which she sustained last month after falling from her horse, “one course has been postponed.” After Amalia successfully completes the course, she will receive her bachelor’s degree in PPLE.

On Instagram, the University of Amsterdam, wrote “Due to a broken arm, she still has one course left to complete, but the diploma will follow soon 🎓.”

Amalia’s first year of college was admittedly not what she had imagined. The month after her first day at the University of Amsterdam, it was reported that the Princess was living back at home due to threats. De Telegraaf reported in September 2022 that security measures had been “stepped up considerably as an attempted kidnapping or an attack is taken into account.”

Then in April of 2024, it was revealed that the Dutch Princess had secretly lived in Spain for over a year to escape threats made against her. Last year, sources told De Telegraaf that Queen Maxima and King Willem-Alexander’s eldest daughter studied at the University of Amsterdam from Madrid and attended Spanish colleges during her time there.

Amalia returned to Spain this past April to unveil a plaque at a tulip garden that she gifted Madrid as a thank you to everyone who made her stay in the city possible “during a period under special circumstances.” “Madrid is like a second home to me, especially in a time that was difficult in the Netherlands,” the Princess said. “In this very Dutch way I want to thank everyone who took care of my safety and well-being in Madrid.”
