After weeks of dressing for the UK heatwave, Princess Charlotte enjoyed a respite from the soaring temperatures as she travelled to Glasgow for a surprise appearance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Despite highs of between 17 and 19 degrees, the 11-year-old decided the weather still called for an effortless summer dress. Seemingly regretting her choice, she was spotted “shivering” alongside her parents the Prince and Princess of Wales and brothers Prince George and Prince Louis in a pretty white polka-dot frock from Guess.

Known as the ‘Chiffon Mini Dress’, it featured a buttoned top, a collar, a shirred waist and a ruffled skirt, all finished with contrasting blue piping. The exact version no longer seems available to buy, but the polka dot frock with the same silhouette is on sale from £50 to £30.

Polka dots were one of the late royal’s most iconic prints

The polka-dot print has become a favourite among the royals, but it was particularly synonymous with Princess Diana’s wardrobe.

Charlotte’s late grandmother famously wore a white dress with blue polka dots in the royal box at Ascot in 1988. Proving her penchant for the classic print, she replicated the nautical-inspired look in 1990, choosing a fitted column dress in navy topped with a contrasting white jacket in Wales.

Meanwhile, Charlotte also wore a similar silhouette to her latest dress in the reverse colourway at Wimbledon in 2024.

Why royals love wearing polka dots

Fashion stylist Sian Clarke of Styled by Sian previously told HELLO! they represent the royals’ “playful” side.

“Polka dots are iconic. They showcase a much freer, more playful and exciting side to Diana, Catherine and Charlotte, while still remaining entirely respectful,” she began.

“A polka dot never offends; it feels approachable and joyful to anyone who sees it. The print strikes a perfect balance between modern and nostalgic, appealing to multiple generations who watch and admire the royal family.

Honing in on Charlotte’s Wimbledon look, she said the shoulders are “cheerful and uplifting, adding personality to each look without ever feeling too serious.”
