The late Princess Diana may have tragically passed away almost 29 years ago, but her fashion legacy is just as relevant today as it was during her iconic years as a working royal.

The influencer of her generation, there was no one more chic than the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry during the ’80s and ’90s. When it came to fashion trends, she set the pace and made every look work for her in her own, unique way.

Designer fashion was something she embraced wholeheartedly; in particular, she had a huge array of stunning pieces of arm candy, which single-handedly generated huge sales for the myriad of brands, resulting in some labels actually naming their precious cargo after the royal in her honour – the ultimate accolade.

The Lady Dior

Princess Diana and Christian Dior go hand in hand. The ‘Lady Dior’ bag was originally known as the ‘Chouchou’. In 1996, however, Diana carried it and catapulted the compact, quilted design into overdrive. From then on, the royal was rarely seen without the statement style, and it became synonymous with her look. Soon after, the French fashion house gave it a revamp and named the bag in her honour. It’s still one of the brand’s most instantly recognisable and popular pieces today.

Diana loved her Gucci handbag which she carried all over London

The Gucci Diana

Long before the ‘Gucci Gang’ was coined, Diana got there first, carrying her bamboo tote handbag by the Italian label all over London. The top-handled design was bold and sleek, and the somewhat daring handles set it apart from other totes. In 2021, Diana’s bag was redesigned and revamped by Alessandro Michele during his time as Creative Director of the famed brand. The new version was named ‘The Diana’ and has the same, instantly identified bamboo handles, as well as an all-new feature – striking neon leather belts fastened around them.

Tod’s re-named their ‘D’ bag after Diana stepped out carrying it

Tod’s ‘Di’ bag

Diana’s Tod’s bag was a true classic, old-money buy. Originally christened the ‘D Bag’, it was crafted in a timeless, rectangular shape and was handcrafted from Italian leather. Once Diana stepped out in it, it was renamed the ‘Di Bag’ and gained a huge celebrity following thereafter; Naomi Campbell and fellow royal Princess Caroline of Monaco had this sumptuous creation in their closets.

Fashion designer Lana Marks was a personal friend of Diana’s and created the ‘Lana Marks Princess Diana bag’, which Diana herself commissioned. Diana had many colours of this bag in her collection. Still available today, albeit very rare, they start from around £10,000.

Salvatore Ferragamo designed the ‘Diana’ bag for the royal in 1990. The stylish bag was a chain-strap purse with a Gancio clasp, and she owned it in a variety of shades, which prompted the fashion house to give it the Diana namesake.
