While the Danish press was busy following Prince Christian’s summer as he was spotted with his new girlfriend and Princess Isabella’s appearance at one of the country’s biggest festivals, where she was photographed with a controversial message that is also making headlines, the Danish Royal House announced on Monday the plan King Frederik and Queen Mary have for their four children. The announcement came as a surprise to everyone.

Princess Isabella of Denmark (3R) poses with parents Queen Mary of Denmark (3L) and King Frederik X of Denmark (2R) and siblings Princess Josephine of Denmark (2L), Prince Vincent of Denmark and Crown Prince Christian of Denmark (R) upon arrival for a performance on the occasion of Princess Isabella’s 18th birthday at the Royal Theatre’s Old Stage in Copenhagen on April 15, 2025. The princess’s actual birthday is Monday, April 21.

Life changes for the oldest and the youngest in the family

As had already been announced, after completing his initial military service from February to May, 19-year-old Crown Prince Christian will begin the Lieutenant Training Course, a one-year program followed by a practical service period as a platoon leader. Meanwhile, his sister Isabella, who this year celebrated her official and dazzling 18th birthday with dignitaries in attendance and a public party that seems to hint her future will be within the institution, will start her final year at Øregård High School. So there are no changes for her until we see her graduation in the summer of 2026.

Prince Vincent, 14, is continuing his eighth-grade studies at Tranegårdsskolen, so nothing is changing for him. His twin sister, however, is already showing she knows what she wants. At her own request, Josephine of Denmark has once again set herself apart from the path followed by her siblings by applying to a boarding school more than three hours from Copenhagen.

Josephine of Denmark the most free-spirited princess

Back in 2023, Princess Josephine, fourth in line to the throne, left Tranegårdsskolen, where she had started studying with her twin brother, to enroll at the private Kildegård School, and therefore no longer attended the same school as Vincent. The Danish Royal House has made it clear that this was at her own request. Princess Josephine will join Spir Efterskole, located in Juelsminde on the Jutland Peninsula, the place where her older cousins, Nikolai and Felix of Denmark, grew up, as Prince Joachim settled there in one of the royal residences during his first marriage.

Josephine of Denmark was the only one who accompanied her parents last June on the official trip to the Faroe Islands

From now on, the youngest in the family will live just over 280 kilometers from Copenhagen. Although the reasons for this move have not been specified, looking at the subjects offered at this boarding school, it may be to nurture her artistic interests. In addition to the compulsory eighth-grade subjects, students can choose from gastronomy, technology, team sports, racket sports, adventure, water sports, art and design, and dance and theater.

It is worth remembering that she is fourth in the line of succession, as she was born 26 minutes after her brother Vincent, and her position in the hierarchy will allow her a somewhat freer future. Although she was the only one who accompanied her parents last June on the official trip to the Faroe Islands, she has already started to make her first steps in theater. In 2023, she made her acting debut in the story of Peter Pan at the Glass Hall Theater in Tivoli, Copenhagen. She was listed in the cast credits as Josephine Sophia Ivalo for her role as one of the inhabitants of the Island of Wishes, along with the mermaids and the forgotten children. In December of last year, she also appeared in a minor role in several episodes of DR’s Christmas calendar Tidsrejsen 2. So, in a way, although it has not yet been officially confirmed, the princess might be set on pursuing a professional path in that world.
