Queen Mary of Denmark has spent over two decades navigating royal life after marrying King Frederik in 2004.

The Australian-born royal is known for her poise, but she has suffered a handful of relatable mishaps over the years. One incident took place at the Design Awards in 2018, where the then-Crown Princess presented 12 awards, including the Designer of the Year award to architect Lars Vejen.

Dressed in a deep green co-ord from Mark Kenly Domino Tan, including wide-leg trousers and a fluid matching top, Mary accessorised with mesh pumps by Gianvito Rossi and the ‘Love’ bracelet by Cartier. She wore her brunette hair in glossy curls as she grinned on stage in photos later shared by the Danish royals’ official Instagram account.

“Every year, the housing magazines Bo Bedre, Bolig Magasinet, Costume Living and Nordic Living are behind a show that honours the best Danish designers and design talents.

“H.K.H. The Crown Princess was present this evening at this year’s Design Awards 2018, held at the Bellevue Theatre north of Copenhagen. Here, 12 design awards were handed out, plus travel scholarships to five design talents.

“In addition to watching the show, Her Royal Highness also handed out the prestigious award as Designer of the Year to designer and architect Lars Vejen,” they captioned the photo.

What was not pictured, however, was the moment that Mary was caught by surprise when the plaque fell out of the wooden box and landed on stage. While posing for photos with one winner, the award slipped onto the floor, leaving Mary open-mouthed.

Laughing off a blunder, the award was quickly put back with the help of the princess.

Queen Mary had not planned on marrying into the Danish royal family and moving overseas when she first crossed paths with Frederik in a Sydney pub.

The pair first crossed paths in the Slip Inn pub during the 2000 Summer Olympics, and advertising executive Mary did not initially realise Frederik’s royal identity.

Their discreet long-distance relationship eventually led to Mary relocating to Copenhagen, and they announced their engagement in October 2003. Mary took on the title of Crown Princess when they got married at Copenhagen Cathedral in May 2004, before the couple’s ascension as King and Queen in January 2024.

Reflecting on her royal romance, she said in her pre-wedding interview she “wanted to be a veterinarian.”

However, she gushed that life in the spotlight was worth navigating for her love story with Frederik. At a gala banquet for her husband’s 50th birthday, she said: “‘To dare is to lose one’s footing for a moment. Not to dare is to lose oneself.’ With these words you invited me into your world and the world of the Danes, after we had only known each other for a short time.

“And there were, indeed, many unsure steps when we started our common journey, side by side and separated at one and the same time.

“We dared to lose that part of our heart, which we allowed the other to hold in their hands. It takes courage to dare, but without daring we lose what could have been. I am so happy that you swept me off my feet and that we dared to fall for each other – not for a moment, but for life. And life with you is never boring. As I have already said: You come in many guises.”
