Rafael Nadal is always a part of Carlos Alcaraz’s team. Throughout Alcaraz’s exciting and blossoming career, Nadal has shown respect to his fellow Spaniard, sharing words of encouragement when it matters most. Now, following Alcaraz’s recent Australian Open win, Nadal is making some definitive statements.
Nadal was recently at the presentation of the Spin and Swing Initiative by his foundation, speaking up about Alcaraz’s tennis achievements. “He’s not a prospect,” said Nadal. “He has 7 Slams, so he’s definitely not just a promise for the future. He’s already a legend.”
“If you look at the historic greats in Slams, there aren’t many who have 7. Calling him a prospect makes no sense.”
Nadal is referring to the fact that many sports commentators and experts continue to refer to Alcaraz as one of the most exciting tennis prospects, being unable to let go of the fact that Alcaraz is only 22 years old. Still, no matter what happens to his career in the future, Alcaraz’s achievements speak for themselves and are already historic in the sport.
Nadal and Alcaraz’s strong friendship
Ever since the start of Alcaraz’s professional career, Nadal has been a great source of support. The two have played against and with each other over the years, playing as doubles partners in the Olympics and against each other in numerous matches, including an unofficial game that aired on Netflix, where Alcaraz came out as the winner.
Even though the two have faced off at different points in their career, their respect has always stood out, with Alcaraz calling Nadal one of his idols and one of the reasons why he decided to become a tennis player.
Earlier this year, Nadal opened up about his longtime rival and friend, Novak Djokovic, who played against Alcaraz on teh Australian Open. He shared that even though he admires Djokovic, he’s rooting for Alcaraz this season.
“I think it’s a positive example of commitment, of resilience… I mean, Novak, for obvious reasons, he’s not at his prime, but he is still very, very competitive at an age that is difficult to be very competitive. So, full respect,” said Nadal, as reported by The Sydney Morning Herald.
“If Novak wins, I will be happy for him because in some ways, it is spectacular what he’s doing at this stage of his career,” he said. “So I will be happy, it will not be a drama for me. But if I have to support someone, I feel I have to support Carlos.”
