Queen Elizabeth II was renowned for her steadfast work ethic, undertaking an estimated 21,000 official engagements during her reign. Her role took her to far-flung corners of the world, meeting thousands of people and opening significant landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House. Her relentless schedule was likely rather tiring, and on one occasion in 2004, it appeared as though her busy timetable caught up with her.
On 4 November, the monarch was captured on camera resting her eyes for a moment during a lecture at the Heinrich-Heine-University hospital in Düsseldorf, Germany. Her Majesty was seated between Alfons Labisch, the rector of the university, and Peer Steinbrück, the Prime Minister of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Surprisingly, this is one of the only times the Queen has been pictured taking a small rest, despite having to sit through many extended lectures, performances and presentations.
The Queen had an unwavering dedication to her duties her whole life. In a radio broadcast on her 21st birthday, she said: “I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service…” Her promise remained right up to her final days, even meeting then British Prime Minister Liz Truss two days before passing away.
The monarch found meeting people incredibly rewarding, and in her 2016 Christmas message, she shared: “I often draw strength from meeting ordinary people doing extraordinary things: volunteers, carers, community organisers and good neighbours; unsung heroes.”

The hardest-working royal is an unofficial title that has long been retained by Princess Anne, who attends many engagements per year, but in 2025, King Charles took the top spot with 532 total engagements. Anne still followed closely behind with a total of 478.
Interestingly, in his memoir Spare, Prince Harry revealed that there is a secret competition between royal family members to secure the most engagements.
He penned: “Though none of us ever spoke about the Court Circular directly, or mentioned it by name, that only created more tension under the surface, which built invisibly as the last day of the calendar year approached.
“Certain family members had become obsessed, feverishly striving to have the highest number of official engagements recorded in the Circular each year, no matter what, and they’d succeeded largely by including things that weren’t, strictly speaking, engagements.”
