Nick Reiner has been indicted on two counts of first-degree murder following the deaths of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, on December 14, 2025.

The new indictment, returned by a Los Angeles grand jury, replaces the previous one with a new alleged special circumstance of lying in wait as well as the use of a knife.

The indictment was returned on July 20 and unsealed on August 12, with Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman sharing a statement in the wake of the news.

“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” he said. “The indictment unsealed today also adds a special circumstance allegation that the defendant committed the murders by means of lying in wait.”

“We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice,” he concluded.

Nick pleaded not guilty to the two counts of murder, and is set to return to court for a pretrial hearing on September 15.

Rob and Michele’s tragic deaths

Rob and Michele were found dead inside their Brentwood home on December 14, before authorities declared their cause of death to have been from “multiple sharp force injuries”.

Hours before their murders, Rob and Michele had attended Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party, where the director had reportedly engaged in a heated argument with Nick, causing him to storm out.

Nick was arrested hours after his parents’ bodies were found, and has been held without bail ever since.

Nick’s legal issues revealed

The 32-year-old filed a petition to access his trust fund in June, stating that he had been unable to pay his legal fees or for “basic necessities while incarcerated”. His previous attorney, Alan Jackson, stepped down from his case in January, citing “circumstances beyond our control”, yet maintained that he believed Nick to be innocent of the crime.

Alan Jackson, attorney of Nick Reiner, appears in court to defend Reiner on murder charges on December 17, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. “Sadly, it’s made it impossible for us to continue our representation of Nick. I’m legally, and I’m ethically prohibited from explaining all the reasons why,” he said at a press conference.

“We’ve investigated this matter top to bottom, back to front. What we’ve learned – and you can take this to the bank – is that pursuant to the laws of this state, pursuant to the law in California, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder.”

Nick’s siblings, Jake Reiner, 35, and Romy Reiner, 28, have spoken publicly in the wake of their parents’ deaths, with the former sharing that his life had turned into a “living nightmare”.

“We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable,” Jake wrote in a Substack piece. “Sure, any loss of a parent is devastating, but nothing compares to losing both of them at the same time and, on top of that, having your brother be at the center of it.”

“It’s almost too impossible to process. I understand that people have questions about what happened. Some of those answers will come in time,” he continued.

“But some parts of this belong only to our family, and keeping them private is the only way to protect what little remains of something that was taken from us.”
