A resurfaced audition story from Robert Pattinson is drawing fresh attention, and it’s as bizarre as it sounds. Long before his rise through “Twilight” and “The Batman,” Pattinson faced one of the most uncomfortable casting experiences of his career while trying out for “300.”
Speaking candidly during a Lie vs. Lie game with Entertainment Weekly, alongside his “The Drama” co-star Zendaya, Pattinson described the moment that left him—and many others—“absolutely traumatized.”
The Audition That Left Actors “Traumatized”
The instructions, according to Pattinson, were both minimal and deeply strange. “The worst audition story was, pretend to carry a rock from one side of the room to another in your underpants. A heavy rock. And that was it, that was the only audition,” he revealed.
The unusual nature of the test didn’t stop there. Pattinson explained that the experience wasn’t isolated; it was happening across the board. “All the guys in England were doing that, and everyone came out looking absolutely traumatized, and not a single person got the job.”
For a film as visually intense and stylized as “300,” directed by Zack Snyder, physicality was clearly part of the casting process. Still, Pattinson’s recollection highlights just how unconventional, and, arguably, uncomfortable, the process could be.
Zendaya Weighs In on Pattinson’s Wild Stories
Zendaya, who joined Pattinson for the interview, had little doubt about the story’s authenticity. She admitted she had heard it before, which made it easier to believe. “Rob throws me off, because you have so many crazy stories,” she said. “I know that some of them are true, because I’ve heard you tell them over and over and over again to other people, exactly the same.”
Her reasoning was that consistency equals credibility. “That feels like it’s the truth. It’s not like he’s exaggerating every time he says it.”
Who Actually Landed the Roles in ‘300’?
While Pattinson walked away from the experience empty-handed, “300” went on to feature a standout cast led by Gerard Butler as King Leonidas. He was joined by David Wenham, Lena Headey, Dominic West, and Michael Fassbender.
The film became a defining entry in stylised action cinema, later spawning the sequel ‘300: Rise of an Empire.’
From Awkward Auditions to Global Stardom
Looking back, the story reads less like a missed opportunity and more like an unusual footnote in a career that would soon skyrocket. Pattinson’s breakthrough with “Twilight” redefined his public image, and his later roles in independent films and major franchises proved his versatility.
Now, with “The Drama” set to hit cinemas on Friday, Pattinson continues to evolve, balancing blockbuster appeal with unpredictable storytelling choices.
