Ryan Gosling has faced aliens, existential crises, and now outer space in Project Hail Mary, but according to him, none of that compares to being part of a Latino family.
During a recent interview with Telemundo, Gosling was asked what’s taken more preparation: the challenges of outer space or dealing with a Latino family. His response was an immediate smile.
“Oh, my God. It’s just brought, it’s just, it’s the most fun I’ve ever had.” Pressed on what exactly he loves about it, he didn’t overcomplicate it. “I just love, you know, I mean, just, it’s such a, I just feel so lucky.”
It’s not the first time Gosling has openly embraced Latinidad in his home. The actor has been with longtime partner Eva Mendes, who is Cuban American, for over a decade, and the two share daughters Esmeralda Amada and Amada Lee. Over the years, Gosling has leaned all the way in.
Back in 2022, a clip of him talking about his favorite Spanish word went viral. He revealed it was “Coño,” explaining, “You can’t use it incorrectly. It’s everything, it’s Coño … Coño is always there for you.”
The internet ate it up because it’s a somewhat vulgar word, the way it’s used in other countries. Gosling has also declared he could happily eat Eva’s mom’s arroz con leche for the rest of his life.
At home, they’re also keeping the culture alive. Mendes revealed in 2019 that they’re trying to raise their daughters bilingual – though it hasn’t been seamless. “I’m Cuban, and we’re trying to teach the kids Spanish, and it’s harder than I thought,” she shared on The Talk.
“I speak Spanglish, and that’s what they’re picking up. So it’s adorable, but it’s technically not a language. It’s Spanglish,” she continued.
Hail Mary
Gosling’s project, Project Hail Mary, is scheduled for a theatrical and IMAX release on March 20, 2026. It follows Dr. Ryland Grace, who wakes up alone in space with no memory and two dead astronauts beside him. As his memories slowly return, he realizes he’s on a one-way mission to save Earth from extinction. A mysterious alien microbe called Astrophage is draining energy from the sun, threatening to plunge the planet into a deadly ice age.
The New York premiere was this week, and Mendes was there to support her man. She shared photos from the premiere, kissing Gosling’s poster, writing, “Last night’s date night looked a little different. I fell in love with Ryland Grace and now that damn alien Rock has my heart, too. I’m so in. Just beautiful.” The couple has famously avoided red carpet moments together for decades.
