Sam Asghari is weighing in after his ex-wife Britney Spears’ recent arrest.
The 32-year-old model and fitness trainer was asked about the situation during an interview with Fox News on Friday, March 6. While discussing the incident, Asghari said he understands that people sometimes make mistakes.
“When it comes to people making mistakes, I understand that,” Tehran-born Asghari said, explaining that much of his focus lately has actually been on the ongoing war in Iran.
He also shared that he hopes the media gives Spears the space she needs moving forward.
“I think that everyone deserves privacy. And I hope the press has learned from the past, that they give her the privacy that she needs.”
Spears, 44, was arrested on the night of March 4 in Ventura, California, on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. She was later released and returned home early the next morning.
According to a press release from California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Ryan Ayers, the singer’s black BMW 430i had been reported to the CHP’s Ventura Communications Center after it was allegedly seen “driving erratically at a high rate of speed.”
Officers eventually pulled the vehicle over.
Authorities said that after the stop, Spears showed signs of “impairment and submitted to a series of field sobriety tests.” She was then taken into custody for what Ayers described as “driving under the influence of a combination of drugs and alcohol.”
The CHP confirmed the investigation is ongoing and said chemical test results have not yet been finalized. A representative for Spears later addressed the situation in a statement to People, calling the arrest “an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable.”
“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” the rep said. “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
They also shared that Spears’ family will be surrounding her with support in the coming days.
“Her boys are going to be spending time with her,” the representative added. “Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”
Spears and Asghari first started dating in 2016. The pair eventually married in June 2022 before separating just over a year later in July 2023. Their divorce was officially finalized in May 2024 after a judge with the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles County signed off on the split.
“The divorce was amicable and the prenup was not challenged,” a source told PEOPLE at the time. “Britney is continuing to flex her freedom and is moving on.”
