Sandra Bullock has spoken in heartbreaking detail about the death of her longtime partner Bryan Randall for the first time, revealing the enormous emotional toll of caring for him while keeping his ALS diagnosis secret.
Bryan died on August 5, 2023, at the age of 57 following a private three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or motor neurone disease.
Appearing on the SmartLess podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett, Sandra, 62, explained that Bryan had made the decision early in his illness that he did not want his diagnosis made public. “He asked me not to share. I know why he asked me not to,” she said.
While Sandra was determined to respect the wishes of the man she once described as “the love of my life”, she admitted that carrying the secret left her profoundly isolated.
“My sister was the only one who knew for a while,” she revealed. “At first I go, ‘Oh, I can handle that. I can be quiet. I don’t wanna harm others because of what I do. So I think not talking for a while was good.'”
However, the reality proved much harder as Sandra attempted to care for Bryan and raise her two children, Louis, now 16, and Laila, 12, against the extraordinary backdrop of the Covid pandemic.

Sandra explained that Bryan’s diagnosis came at almost exactly the same time as the world went into lockdown, describing the period as “a trifecta that was pretty dark”.
“The entire world was locked in with a pandemic,” she recalled. “It was literally like the final diagnosis, even though he was ill for half of our relationship.”
“The diagnosis came almost at the same time with the cloak of the pandemic. So as the pandemic came down, and I have a child with severe asthma, I was panicking.”

“I had two young kids that were navigating it, especially a little girl who saw him as a father figure,” she explained. “I wasn’t allowed to tell anybody. My sister was the only one who knew for a while. It’s a huge weight.”
Sandra eventually confided in a tiny circle of trusted friends, including Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, the wife of her longtime friend Jason Bateman.
ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells controlling voluntary muscles. As the disease progressed, Sandra said she found herself beginning to mourn Bryan long before his physical death. “I was grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” she revealed, explaining that “there was something that had shifted.”
“My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill.”
Bryan had been sober for 14 years, but as his suffering intensified, Sandra said she made it clear to his doctors that his comfort should come first. She recalled telling them to give him “what he needs”.
At the same time, Sandra was still required to fulfil her professional commitments, including promoting a movie while privately navigating the crisis at home. “I had to release a film at the same time and talk about gray,” she recalled. “I saw myself on the red carpet and I was like, you just look at my face. And I am, I’m a woodblock.”

Bryan’s family confirmed his death in August 2023, revealing only then that he had spent three years living with ALS. “Bryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private, and those of us who cared for him did our best to honor his request,” the family said at the time.
They also paid tribute to those who had cared for him throughout his illness. “We are immensely grateful to the tireless doctors who navigated the landscape of this illness with us and to the astounding nurses who became our roommates, often sacrificing their own families to be with ours.”
“At this time we ask for privacy to grieve and to come to terms with the impossibility of saying goodbye to Bryan.”
ALS is an incurable condition that progressively affects the nervous system and muscles. Around half of those diagnosed live for approximately three years following the onset of symptoms, although progression varies significantly between individuals. The condition is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease in the United States, after the legendary baseball player who died from it in 1941.

Sandra first met Bryan in 2015 when she hired the photographer to take pictures at her son Louis’ birthday party. Their relationship soon became serious, and they made their public debut as a couple at the premiere of Sandra’s film Our Brand Is Crisis in October that year.
It marked Sandra’s first major relationship following the breakdown of her marriage to Jesse James. Bryan quickly became part of Sandra’s family life, helping to raise Louis and Laila alongside her. He was also father to an adult daughter, Skylar, from a previous relationship.
Although Sandra and Bryan never legally married, their commitment ran deep. In December 2017, they reportedly exchanged vows during an intimate beach ceremony in the Bahamas surrounded by loved ones. Sandra later offered a rare insight into their relationship during a 2021 appearance on Red Table Talk.
“I found the love of my life,” she said of Bryan. “We share two beautiful children, three children, his older daughter. It’s the best thing ever.”
She also explained why she didn’t feel marriage was necessary to validate their relationship. “I don’t want to say do it like I do it, but I don’t need a paper to be a devoted partner and devoted mother,” she said.
For Sandra, Bryan was also the example she wanted her children to see. “He’s the example that I would want my children to have,” she said.
