The actress stepped onto the red carpet for the London premiere of Practical Magic 2 on August 26, wearing a strapless leopard-print Givenchy gown that left her shoulder exposed.

A photographer snapped a delicate tattoo sitting just below her shoulder. The design appears to read “LB²”, with the letters intertwined and a tiny number two sitting above them.

Bullock has not publicly confirmed what the tattoo means, but E! News reports that the design appears to honor her two children, Louis and Laila. However, it’s unclear if the B is dedicated to Bryan or stands for Louis and Laila Bullock.

The tattoo reveal comes shortly after the 62-year-old actress opened up publicly for the first time about Randall’s battle with ALS and the devastating final years of his life.

Randall, a model-turned-photographer, died in August 2023 at 57 following a private three-year battle with ALS. His family announced his death at the time, explaining that Randall had chosen to keep his diagnosis private.

Bullock honored that request for years, even as she helped care for him and tried to navigate his illness alongside their children. During a recent appearance on the SmartLess podcast with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, Bullock finally spoke about what those years were like. “I wasn’t allowed to speak about it,” she said. “That was the request.”

Bryan asked Sandra to keep his diagnosis a secret

Bullock explained that she understood why Randall wanted to keep his diagnosis private, but carrying something that enormous without being able to openly talk about it was incredibly difficult.

For a while, she said, only her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, knew what the family was going through. “I wasn’t allowed to tell anybody,” Bullock recalled.

That even meant keeping the news from people who were extremely close to her family. Bullock said she initially convinced herself she could handle the silence. “At first I go, ‘Oh, I can handle that. I can be quiet.’” But as Randall’s condition progressed, the reality became much harder to compartmentalize.

Bullock was not only grieving the man she loved, but helping navigate his care while raising their two children, Louis and Laila. She also looked into different treatments and trial drugs as the family tried to find ways to help him.

And eventually, she realized she had begun grieving him before he was even gone. “Where he was in his journey, both physically and mentally, I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” she said. “There was something that had shifted. My person left a lot earlier than the body left,” she said. “I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill.”

The impact it had on their children

Randall was not only Bullock’s partner but a father figure to her children, making his illness something the entire family had to navigate. Bullock said both children understood that something serious was happening, although they processed it very differently.

“I can see and be around just about anything,” she said. “But I had two young kids that were navigating it — especially a little girl who saw him as a father figure.”

Her son, Louis, began recognizing the family dynamic about two years before Randall died. Bullock said he understood that the situation was becoming unhealthy for him and chose to step back. “He smartly disengaged himself and said, ‘This is a safer space for me to sit,’” she recalled.

Bullock said she never wanted Louis to feel like he had to take on the role of the man of the family. “I didn’t want him to become the man of the family at that age,” she said. “My job is to be both at that time.”

“And I want him to be a kid during a pandemic when everything is already f–ked anyway and people are suffering everywhere.” Laila’s experience was different because of the bond she had developed with Randall.

Bullock said her daughter remained close to him until roughly six months before his death, when she eventually asked her mother not to make her visit him. “Then she says, ‘Can you please say no when they call me over to go visit?’” Bullock recalled.

Bullock told her she would respect that boundary. “And I said, ‘Absolutely, but if you do wanna go visit, I will come with you, and I will be right there. And if you tap out, I am right there,’” she said. The actress has previously been much more open about just how important Randall was to her family.

In 2021, she called him “the love of my life” during an appearance on Red Table Talk, explaining that she didn’t need a marriage certificate to know what their relationship meant. “I am someone who went through the divorce process. I found the love of my life,” Bullock said at the time. “We share two beautiful children — three children, his older daughter.” “It’s the best thing ever.”

Bullock also described Randall as the right person to help raise her children, saying, “My life was already on the track, and here’s this beautiful human being who doesn’t want anything to do with my life but [was] the right human being” for their family.
