While she was once a senior working royal and part of the King’s inner circle, Sarah Ferguson has not been seen publicly with the monarch in nearly a year. However, the former Duchess of York could be planning to reconnect with the monarch, a royal author claims.

Sarah’s last official public appearance alongside the King was at the late Duchess of Kent’s funeral on 16 September 2025. Since then, the former Duchess and her ex-husband Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor have retreated from public life amid renewed scrutiny over their links to paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

But according to royal expert Phil Dampier, Sarah “will want to try and get back in with the King for the sake of her daughters”, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. Sarah and Andrew’s grown-up daughters have not completely retreated from public life, but have kept a very low profile amid the controversy surrounding their parents.

The author told the Daily Mail that the former Duchess would want to “at least not upset” the monarch.

While Sarah has previously published two autobiographies, Phil claimed it was “less likely” she would write another book and “spill the beans” on the royal family. Sarah’s first autobiography in 1995 covered her marriage to Andrew and early life in the royal family. Her second, titled Finding Sarah: A Duchess’s Journey to Find Herself, came out in 2011 following the breakdown of her relationship with the former Duke of York.

Sarah’s relationship with the royals

Sarah joined the royal fold in 1986 when she married Charles’ younger brother Andrew. The former Duchess had a famously close bond with her sister-in-law, the late Princess Diana, recalling to HELLO! in an exclusive chat that they “had such fun” together.

After her divorce from Andrew was finalised in 1996, Sarah maintained an enduring bond with her late mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II, and continued to join the royals at family events such as Christmas Day at Sandringham despite no longer being a working royal. She also had an unconventional living situation with her ex at Royal Lodge in Windsor up until Andrew was stripped of his royal titles last October and evicted from the property earlier this year.

Sarah shared a sweet exchange with her former brother-in-law Charles while attending Royal Ascot alongside the royals in June 2025. The monarch greeted her with a kiss on the hand in a rare public moment of affection. While Sarah and her daughter Eugenie were at the annual racing event last year, they did not show this year as they continue to lie low.

After keeping a relatively low profile in recent months to focus on their growing families and to navigate the ongoing media scrutiny surrounding their parents, Beatrice and Eugenie broke their cover in May when they were spotted at model Poppy Delevingne’s star-studded birthday bash in London.

Charles’ nieces then returned to the royal spotlight on 6 June to join other senior members of the royal family, including the King, in the Cotswolds for their eldest cousin Peter Phillips’ wedding to NHS nurse Harriet (née Sperling).

The sisters were accompanied by their respective husbands, but their parents were noticeably absent from the family affair.
